Senior citizen duped of 7.6L ahead of daughter’s wedding | Kolkata News – The Times of India

Kolkata: A senior citizen’s dream of organising a grand wedding for his daughter turned into a nightmare when he was duped of Rs 7.6 lakh by two men posing as staff at a luxury hotel in New Town.
The Haridevpur resident visited the five-star hotel last Dec to book a venue for his daughter’s wedding scheduled on May 24. There, he was introduced to two persons who claimed to be hotel staff. They convinced him to book the banquet hall and rooms after a tour of the venue.
Purnendu Bikas Saha (62), said: “On Dec 12, the reception desk directed me to Suvanjan Mullick, who introduced himself as an employee of Zone by The Park, looking after banquet booking. I liked the venue and visited again on Dec 23, when Mullick introduced me his superior, Sandipan Das. I booked the banquet and 20 rooms — at Rs 9.9 lakh — and transferred around Rs 3 lakh to the account of OYO Hotels & Homes Pvt Ltd on Dec 29,” Saha wrote in a complaint lodged at Techno City police station.
Saha said it was a private bank’s account at their Gurgaon branch, and the two men issued a proforma invoice against the payment on the letterhead of the hotel. Saha said, based on emails from Mullick and Das, he paid two more instalments. The second instalment of Rs 2.3 lakh was paid to a private bank account of Soumodip Khara at Kasba on Feb 19, and the third instalment of Rs 2.3 lakh was paid to the account of Somnath Ghosh in another private bank at Naihati on April 16. He received a proforma invoice for the second instalment, again on the hotel letterhead, but did not get the third invoice. “I called the hotel on April 19 and was informed by the manager of sales that no booking exists in my name, nor has the hotel received any payment in my favour,” Saha said.
The hotel said a representative of a third-party vendor — Weddingz.in (OYO Weddingz) — had fraudulently used the hotel’s credentials for personal gain. “This matter has been escalated to the regional head of Weddingz.in, and simultaneously, a formal com-plaint has been registered wi-th the local police. As a gesture of good faith and with the gue-st’s concern as our highest pri-ority, we are holding the reque-sted venue and room reservat-ions until the matter is resolved,” the hotel statement said.
Cops have started a case against the FIR-named persons. “The two men are absconding. We have started scanning CCTV footage and are inspecting the bank accounts,” an officer said, adding that they are not ruling out insider involvement.

Lens on Bandra mall’s nods, fire brigade’s actions | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Published

on

Mumbai: Permissions granted to Bandra’s Link Square Mall, where a massive fire raged on for over 21 hours last week and caused widespread destruction, have come under BMC’s scrutiny.
The civic body has sought documents and reports from various departments, including its building proposal department and the H-West ward office, to assess, among other things, whether any alterations were made to the two-decade-old building that could have contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. The fire brigade has also been directed to file a report on the actions it took on that day after receiving the distress call, including the manpower and equipment deployed at each stage of fire escalation, right up to declaring it a ‘level-4′ (severe) call.
BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani had ordered an inquiry under joint municipal commissioner D Gangatharan a day after the fire.
“Among other things, we will examine why it took the fire brigade the time it did to extinguish the fire completely, which led to extensive damage to the mall. We will also examine whether there were alterations carried out in the mall building and whether permissions and NOCs were issued for the same by various departments, including the fire brigade and the building proposal department, and whether any inspections were carried out in the past. We will also check whether the mall had a functional firefighting system. If there are any lapses from any quarters, we will examine those, too,” said a BMC official.
The official said prima facie, it looks like the fire originated from the electrical fittings of a showroom in the basement. “The statements of the mall operators were taken. We are also seeking a report from ward officials.”
The mall had 220 shops, including an electronics showroom and two eateries. Former MLA Zeeshan Siddique, whose late father Baba Siddique built the mall, had alleged that the fire spread owing to the fire brigade’s negligence. The fire brigade has rebutted this charge.

Monsoon waterlogging: Agencies focus on city’s flood-prone zones | Kolkata News – The Times of India

Published

Kolkata: Multiple state agencies will work in close contact with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to prevent flooding in the city’s major waterlogging pockets. Mayor Firhad Hakim on Monday held a monsoon preparedness meeting with state govt agencies, like PWD, KMDA, the irrigation department, the fire services department, Kolkata Police, CESC, and the Kolkata Port Trust.
While the PWD officials were asked to cooperate with the KMC sewerage and drainage department officials to ensure no flooding of SSKM Hospital or the state Assembly building, the KMDA officials were told to maintain the drainage system of Maa and AJC Bose flyovers. On a rainy day, traffic crawls on these flyovers due to waterlogging on stretches. State irrigation department officials said dredging work on a few outfall canals, like Beliaghata Circular Canal and Manikhali, was on the verge of completion. However, the mayor asked them to ensure that stormwater receded quickly through several outfall canals around the city that form the backbone of the drainage system.
Hakim asked the drainage department officials to keep a close eye on the functioning of the drainage pumping stations, as these stations play a vital role in draining stormwater from waterlogged streets.
Kolkata Police additional commissioner D P Singh requested the KMC to hand over a list of extremely insecure buildings across the city so that timely action can be taken to shift the residents before monsoon. Hakim asked the KoPT officials to take adequate measures to drain stormwater from Taratala Road and Hyde Road. The KMC roads department will need to prepare a list of potholed roads and take timely and effective steps for their repair before the monsoon.
