IPL 2025: SRH’s Unadkat cites lack of ‘bowling partnership’ in loss against GT

Assessing Sunrisers Hyderabad’s lacklustre bowling overall in the ongoing IPL season so far, Jaydev Unadkat on Friday (May 2, 20225) said that the team has lacked consistent contributions from multiple bowlers in each game. He added that the team has struggled with bowling partnerships and execution.

On Friday, Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill hit half-centuries to power Gujarat Titans to a 38-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

“From my experience of playing in the IPL for all these years, for a team to do well, there have to be at least three or four bowlers who have to contribute in every game. And probably this year, I would say that we are lacking that.

“When two guys are bowling well, the other three are probably not really bowling in tandem. Like we look at partnerships in terms of batting, I think it’s the same in bowling as well. When you’re not bowling well from both ends, it creates unnecessary pressure on the other guy. And then the plans also change. So, somehow, that hasn’t really clicked for us. We have to take the blame for not being the best bowling side in the tournament.

“I can’t say that there is anything that we lack in terms of training and planning. It’s just the execution out there on the field, which can go wrong at times,” he said at the post-match press conference after his team’s 38-run loss to Gujarat Titans here.

Speaking about the amazingly consistent top-three of the GT batting line-up, Gerald Coetzee said: “I think they’re just playing good cricket shots. There’s not much slogging going on. Maybe it’s not as flashy, but it does the job perfectly.”

NEW DELHI: South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada revealed on Saturday that he is currently under provisional suspension after testing positive for a recreational drug. Rabada had exited the Indian Premier League last month, with the Gujarat Titans announcing his departure was due to “an important personal matter.” At the time, Rabada cited personal reasons for returning home.
“This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug,” Rabada said in a statement.
“Moving forward, this moment will not define me,” he added. “I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft.”
Cricket South Africa (CSA) also released a statement confirming the development.
“Cricket South Africa (CSA) can confirm that Proteas Men right arm fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has returned an adverse analytical finding for the use of a prohibited substance. The incident is regrettable, however, Rabada has reassured CSA and his fans of his commitment to upholding professional standards and has restated his passion to the sport of cricket and the country he represents with purpose,” CSA stated.
“CSA is fully committed to drug-free sport and reminds cricket players, both professional and amateur, of the importance of adhering to all regulations. We are steadfast in our support to all players in this regard,” the release added.
Rabada has been a key figure for South Africa, with 327 Test wickets at an average of 22, along with 168 ODI and 71 T20I scalps.

For Brad Haddin, watching Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s stunning hundred felt like watching highlights. “The whole thing was highlights,” Punjab Kings’ assistant coach said here on Saturday. “You didn’t have to sit for a long time to watch it. It was extraordinary viewing.”

“What I liked most about his batting was that the ball kept going out of the park,” said the former Australian wicketkeeper. “Another thing is the way he played his game at such a young age: he did not get overawed by this enormous competition called the IPL. The coaching staff have done a good job to hold him back and get him in for the tournament. And that is the story you want from the IPL.”

Lucknow Super Giants’ David Miller, who himself knows a thing or two about sending the bowlers out of the ground, is as impressed with the Rajasthan Royals teenager. “It is about maintaining that (form) moving forward and keep winning games for whatever teams that he plays for. He is one for the future. And that is the beauty of the IPL. You get to see a lot of depth in Indian cricket, some incredible players coming through.”

Miller is glad that another Indian youngster that caused a big sensation, with the ball last season, is back in his team after injury. Mayank Yadav, who stunned with his genuine pace, picked up two wickets on his return. “He is an incredibly talented young man with a lot of cricket ahead of him,” said the South African.

Dark clouds hung ominously for much of the day, and then it rained pretty heavily. The HPCA Stadium still looked pretty as a picture.

“The first thing the players – especially the foreign ones – after reaching the ground do is to take out their phones (and click pictures),” Punjab Kings assistant coach Brad Haddin said on the eve of the IPL match against Lucknow Super Giants.

This is the first match for Kings at their second home ground. They have finished their assignments at their base of New Chandigarh, and their last three home games are to be played here.

They should be looking to make the most out of the home advantage, with the league in its business end. They are very much in the race for the playoffs, having won six of their 10 games.

One of those wins was against LSG. Skipper Shreyas Iyer and opener Prabhsimran Singh cracked half-centuries in that away match, a month ago. The two men have continued their merry run, and along with Priyansh Arya, they form a formidable top-order.

There is balance in the bowling attack, comprising the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal and Marco Jansen. The LSG bowling is bolstered by the return of the fiery Mayank Yadav.

The visitor, which is also fancying its chances to move to the last four, must be hoping its captain Rishabh Pant finds his touch again. The overseas batters – Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram – have delivered though.
