Operation Sindoor: J&K schools closed today in 5 border districts due to security concerns, check details here – The Times of India

Published

on

Educational institutions across the five border districts of Jammu are closed today, May 7, 2025, due to escalating security concerns in the region. This decision affects schools, colleges, and other educational establishments in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch. The closure follows Indian Armed Forces’ missile strikes on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. The closure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid heightened tensions following the attacks and subsequent shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border.

What led to the closure?

The closure of educational institutions follows a series of developments along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir. This morning, the Indian armed forces launched missile strikes on nine terror targets located in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). These strikes targeted key militant bases, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold in Bahawalpur and a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) facility in Muridke. The missile strikes are part of India’s ongoing efforts to counter cross-border terrorism and maintain stability in the region.

Precautionary measures amid the risk of civilian casualties

The recent escalation in violence has resulted in a higher risk for casualties. Defence sources report that three civilians were killed in the previous night’s indiscriminate firing and shelling by Pakistan’s military. The attacks took place across the LoC and the International Border, further exacerbating the security situation in the region. As a precautionary measure, authorities have opted to keep educational institutions closed, ensuring the safety of students and staff amidst the volatile circumstances. Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar’s announcement on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that all schools, colleges, and educational institutions in the affected districts will remain shut for the day.

What does it mean for students and parents?

For students and parents in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch, the closure of educational institutions highlights the seriousness of the security concerns in the region. Parents are advised to stay informed through local authorities and educational institutions for any further updates or potential changes to the schedule.
