We are automating intelligence. But we haven’t decided what it’s for


AI systems now influence who gets opportunity, who is visible, who is trusted—and increasingly, who is believed. They shape incentives, behavior, and social outcomes at a scale no previous technology has reached. Yet the way we talk about AI remains oddly shallow.

Every week, the headlines get louder. Bigger models. Faster reasoning. Autonomous agents. Entire categories of work being replaced. Trillion-dollar valuations justified by exponential curves. The subtext is always the same: move faster, or be left behind.

What’s missing from most of these conversations is the most important question of all:

*What kind of civilization are we building as we automate intelligence itself?*

After decades of building and observing technology ecosystems in India and globally—and through my work at NOSTOPS, engaging with founders, policymakers, and the Indian diaspora—this gap has become impossible to ignore.

*AI Is No Longer Just a Tool. It Is a Behavioral System*

AI has already moved beyond efficiency. It is now a behavioral system.

Algorithms don’t just optimize processes; they shape choices, reward certain behaviors, suppress others, and quietly influence how people think, decide, and conform. Engagement systems reward outrage. Ranking systems define credibility. Recommendation engines narrow—or expand—curiosity.

The dominant global approach to AI remains commercial. Optimization, scale, and market capture have driven extraordinary innovation. But when commercial logic becomes the primary lens, *long-term social impact is pushed outside the decision-making frame.*

Efficiency increases. Reflection disappears. Metrics replace judgment.

This isn’t a failure of technology. It’s a failure of framing our outcomes.

*Why Indian Knowledge Systems Matter Now*

This is where Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) offer an unexpectedly modern—and urgently relevant—lens.

IKS are often misunderstood as being about ancient texts or spirituality. In reality, they represent thousands of years of disciplined inquiry into how intelligence is understood and applied—how responsibility accompanies capability, how ethics shape action, and how language and context determine meaning.

Across Indian intellectual traditions, a consistent worldview emerges: intelligence is never value-free, capability is always bound to responsibility, and meaning cannot be separated from context. These principles are not abstract philosophy; they are operational assumptions about how knowledge functions in the real world.

These are not philosophical luxuries. They are precisely the dimensions modern AI struggles with today.

From a civilizational perspective, the more urgent question is not how powerful AI can become, but how it will shape human judgment over time. *Acceleration without ethics deepens harm, while automation without responsibility quietly strips away human judgment.*

*The Case for IKS-Based Large Language Models*

Today’s Large language models reflect the perspectives of the material they learn from. Most have learned from huge piles of Western, web-based content created for commercial purposes designed to attract clicks and engagement.

This isn’t a flaw—it’s a consequence of history and incentives.

But it also reveals a profound opportunity.

*IKS-based LLMs represent a new frontier in AI development.*

Such models could capture centuries of Indian reasoning and knowledge traditions—from Nyaya logic and Vedic mathematics to Ayurveda, Arthashastra, and Natya Shastra. These are not merely bodies of knowledge; they are complete systems for reasoning, judgment, and decision-making grounded in context.

An IKS-based LLM would not merely generate fluent language. It would be designed to reason with context, surface ethical trade-offs, and reflect on consequence.

That is a fundamentally different ambition for artificial intelligence.

*Intelligence Is Not Judgment*

One of the most practical distinctions Indian thought offers is between intelligence and judgment.

Modern AI systems are extraordinarily intelligent in narrow ways. They recognize patterns, predict outcomes, and optimize with speed and precision. What they cannot do is decide what should be optimized.

That choice always belongs to humans.

The greatest risk in the AI era is not rogue machines. It is *undisciplined human intent amplified by machines.* When speed replaces reflection and metrics replace values, intelligence accelerates outcomes without questioning direction.

IKS-based LLMs could help mitigate this risk—not by replacing human judgment, but by strengthening it.

*Context Is Not an Edge Case*

Most AI systems operate under a generalized framework, flattening local differences in pursuit of broad rules. Indian Knowledge Systems take the opposite approach: knowledge is always situated—shaped by time, place, role, and circumstance. Meaning depends on context, and any system that ignores this risks breaking when applied across diverse societies.

As AI spreads into informal economies, multilingual cultures, and socially complex environments, context is not noise to be eliminated—it is the system itself.

India’s diversity makes this visible early. But this is not an India-specific challenge. It is a preview of what every society will face as AI scales.

*Responsibility Cannot Be Automated Away*

Across Indian traditions, responsibility is treated as non-negotiable. No matter how advanced the tool, moral accountability remains human.

Once responsibility is delegated to machines, ethics becomes optional. And optional ethics does not survive scale.

IKS also carries a deep systems orientation. Reality is interconnected, shaped by long chains of cause and effect. Algorithms don’t just respond to behavior; they reshape it over time, reinforcing feedback loops that can either strengthen or erode social trust.

Embedding IKS-informed principles directly into LLMs offers a path toward AI that is ethically grounded, context-aware, and socially responsible by design.

*A Civilizational Lens for AI*

A civilizational lens changes how AI is evaluated. It shifts focus away from short-term performance metrics toward long-term societal outcomes.

It asks not just what an AI system does today, but what kinds of behaviors it rewards over time—and what kind of society those rewards eventually produce.

Trust or suspicion?
Judgment or dependency?
Curiosity or conformity?

Language plays a central role here. Long before generative AI, Indian scholars, such as Panini, understood language as a force that shapes cognition itself. IKS-based LLMs could operationalize this insight—strengthening reasoning, not just fluency.

*The Defining Question of the AI Era*

This moment isn’t about claiming moral authority or exporting ancient wisdom.

Every civilization embeds values into its tools—whether consciously or not. What makes this moment different is scale and speed.

India’s complexity makes visible, sooner than elsewhere, of the tensions AI will create globally. In that sense, India is not an exception. It is an early signal.

The defining question of the AI era is not who builds the largest models or moves the fastest.

It is whether we pause long enough to decide *what kind of intelligence we are building—and what kind of future that intelligence is shaping.*
