A week-long training programme for National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers in disaster management and mitigation activities began here on Monday.
The district-level training programme in Thiruvananthapuram, jointly organised by the National Disaster Management Authority, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, and the State NSS Cell, was inaugurated by Kadakampally Surendran, MLA
Inaugurating the training programme, Mr. Surendran said that NSS volunteers were always at the forefront, alongside rescue agencies, in organising relief activities during disasters.
Their efforts in organising community awareness activities, classes and campaigns in rural and urban areas on disaster warnings, safety precautions and self-rescue methods have been commendable, he added.
Shubha R. Nair, District Coordinator of the Disaster Management Programme and NSS Programme Officer of Neermankara NSS College, presided over the function.
NSS Regional Director Y. M. Uppin delivered the keynote address.
