The trailer of Tamil star Sivakarthikeyan’s much-anticipated political drama, Parasakthi, was unveiled by the makers on Sunday (January 4). Directed by Sudha Kongara and also starring Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa Murali and Sreeleela among others, the film is set to release in theatres on January 10, clashing with Vijay’s swansong film Jana Nayagan which is releasing a day prior.

In the nearly 200-second trailer, we see glimpses of a story about the students’ movement against Hindi imposition that grew in the 1960s in Tamil Nadu. Sivakarthikeyan stars as Chezhian, a coal tosser at the Indian Railways. “When a Madraasi goes to Delhi, the Madraasi speaks in Hindi. When a Hindi guy comes to Madurai, he must talk in Tamil,” he says. When a law enforcing Hindi as the official language of the state is passed by the Central government, Atharvaa’s character, Chezhian’s brother, joins an agitation against the Hindi imposition to much dismay of his brother.

But soon enough, when an evil force awakens (Ravi Mohan as the antagonist), the hero must rise to fight for the rights of the Tamils. “We are not against Hindi-speakers; we are against Hindi imposition,” he says. A powerful student army backs him in the final moments of the trailer. The promo also shows glimpses of Sreeleela as Sivakarthikeyan’s love interest.

Parasakthi has music composed by GV Prakash Kumar. Notably, this is the composer’s 100th film. With cinematography by Ravi K Chandran, the film has editing by Sathish Suriya and production design by MR Karthik Rajkumar.

Aakash Baskaran produces the film under the Dawn Pictures banner. Notably, the trailer comes just a day after the makers held a grand audio launch function of the film. The hype around Parasakthi has reached sky-high, especially since it’s taking on Vijay’s Jana Nayagan this Pongal.
