The mortal remains of the departed jurist David Annoussamy were laid to rest with State honours on Wednesday (January 21, 2026).

Since morning, the Laporte Street residence of Justice Annoussamy, who had retired as a Judge of the Madras High Court, witnessed a steady stream of politicians, judicial officers, lawyers, government officials and people from all walks of life turning up to pay their last respects.

Justice Annoussamy, who passed away on January 17 at the age of 98 was widely respected as a legal luminary of international renown, a public intellectual and a friend-philosopher-guide to civil society collectives striving to make Puducherry a better place.

In the afternoon, a requiem mass was organised at the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Mission Street. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and Tourism Minister K. Lakshminarayanan were among those who paid floral tributes.

For the benefit of his wellwishers elsewhere, including in France, where his most significant contribution was in helping French jurist Alain Supiot establish the Nantes Institute for Advance Study, the family members and friends had arranged for the requiem mass proceedings to be livestreamed on YouTube.

The mortal remains were interred at the cemetery in Uppalam.
