Iran has welcomed the US military’s withdrawal from the Ain al-Assad base in Iraq, calling it a major step toward Iraqi sovereignty and regional stability. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised the handover to Iraqi forces during talks with his counterpart Fuad Hussein in Tehran, as the two discussed regional security and recent unrest in Iran. The move follows a 2024 security pact between Baghdad and Washington outlining a phased end to the US-led coalition’s combat mission against ISIS. As Iraq inspects the vacated base, Tehran hails closer cooperation and non-interference across the region.
