Madurai and Dindigul districts received continuous rain on Tuesday. However, this did not stop the public from rushing to the markets to buy the essentials for the pongal festival.

In Dindigul district, it started raining from 9 a.m., while in Madurai district it started raining at around noon. It rained continuously till about 4 p.m.. The rains led to traffic congestion and left parts of the cities inundated.

School and college students and officergoers found it difficult to move along the roads that were choking with traffic. With schools and colleges celebrating pongal on the campus, the students braved the weather conditions to reach the educational institutions for the event.

Despite the heavy rain, the cities witnessed brisk sales of flowers, sugarcane and turmeric. People rushed to the markers, some wearing their raincoats and others with their umbrellas out. The vendors expressed their satisfaction that the rain did not dampen the festive spirit.
