Several shops, including one selling furniture, in a shopping complex on Maratha Galli in Hubballi were gutted in a fire that broke out on Thursday night.
Fortunately, none was hurt in the fire accident.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar told presspersons on Friday that a few passersby noticed the fire in the third floor of Sukh Sagar shopping complex in Maratha Galli on Thursday night and alerted the police.
The floor housed a furniture showroom named Metro.
On being alerted, Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot. It took some time for them to douse the fire.
As there are some residential buildings adjoining the complex, steps were taken to evacuate residents immediately as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, none was hurt in the fire accident, he said.
He said that a case has been booked and investigation will be taken up to establish the cause of the fire.
According to preliminary information, a short circuit is said to be the reason for the fire. While articles in the furniture shop have been completely gutted, shops in other floors too have suffered damage. The extent of loss is being estimated.
