Domestic wholesale automobile sales shrank 3.6% to 18,97,445 units, on declining car sales in June against the same month last year, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
“The performance of the auto industry was relatively flat, though the retail registration for passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers were marginally higher than the previous Q1. Overall sentiments across categories have remained subdued so far, even as the industry continues to navigate supply-side challenges. With the upcoming festival season coupled with the benefits of RBI repo rate cuts, we expect consumer sentiments to improve, ” said Shailesh Chandra President, SIAM
The overall passenger vehicle sales declined 6.3% to 2.76 lakh units in the reporting month. Production of all automobiles also grew at a sluggish 1.2% in the reporting month, to 23,64,868 units. Exports however performed better increasing 28.1% to 5,02,131 units in June 2025.
Manufacturers sold just 85,091 cars , which is 15.3% lower than the sales in June 2024. Decline in car sales were the major reasons behind the fall in headline numbers, although sales of almost all categories of automobiles declined in 2024-25. Two wheelers sales too declined 3.4% to 15.6 lakh units in the month under revenue. Three wheelers sales increased 3.8% to 61,828 units in June 2025, as against the same month last year. This was because of a 5.3% increase in passenger carrier (auto riskshaw) sales. Other categories like good carriers, E-Rikshaws and E-carts registered a decline in sales.
SIAM also released numbers for the quarterly sales. The automobile sales slumped 5.1% to 60,74,874 in the quarter ended June 2025 as against the same month last year. The quarterly trend of sales numbers of the current fiscal more or less mirrored the monthly data. SIAM said that the data does not include BMW, Mercedes, JLR, and Volvo.
