NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old woman, who was working as a domestic help, was arrested for allegedly stealing gold and silver jewellery worth several lakh rupees from her employer’s house in Bindapur.The accused was identified as Bharti.The theft came to light after the complainant, a resident of Bal Udyan Road in Bindapur, reported that her ancestral jewellery went missing between December 7 and 13, while she and her family were out of town. A case was registered under Section 305 (theft in a dwelling house) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Bindapur police station.Police found no signs of forced entry, leading them to suspect the involvement of an insider. CCTV footage from the area showed a masked woman entering the house on December 12 and leaving within 15 minutes. Further analysis helped police trace her movements to Janakpuri, where she was identified by the complainant as her former maid.“Technical surveillance revealed that the accused switched off her earlier mobile phone and started using a new number. Based on her movement pattern, multiple raids were conducted before she was finally located at her rented flat in Janakpuri,” said DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh.Bharti was arrested when the police raided her house, where she was allegedly packing her belongings to flee.She told cops that she sold part of the stolen jewellery for around Rs 3.8 lakh, which she deposited in her bank account.Police said she earlier worked as a maid at the complainant’s residence and allegedly duplicated the house keys during her employment to carry out the theft. Gold and silver jewellery, including a chain, earrings, ring, locket, silver payal and toe rings, were seized from the rented accommodation.The accused further told the police that she committed the theft to arrange money to buy a small flat for herself and her child. She had no previous criminal record.
