Popular Mumbai-based death metal band Demonic Resurrection is set to headline the 13th edition of Brutal Carnage on September 27 as part of the band’s 25th anniversary celebrations. They are back to play in Chennai after 10 years.
The band forms part of Metal Chennai’s festival “Brutal Carnage”. This year’s edition is the 13th installment in the series. The band is going to be supported by metal bands from Chennai including Godia, and Perception Delta when they play at Spotted Deer, the newest venue supporting new music acts.
Self-classified as a symphonic death metal band with a “melodic edge to it”, Demonic Resurrection began in the year 2000 by Sahil ‘Demonstealer’ who has been a constant member of the band throughout its shuffle of band mates over the years. Nikhil Rajkumar, a drummer from Chennai joins the band as the latest addition to their posse of dedicated metalheads.
Demonic Resurrection was featured as part of Indian metal band Bloodywood’s tour of Europe earlier this year.
“The metal community in Chennai seeks to give voices to those who dare to go against the current of mainstream music,” explains Antara Arvind, the lead vocalist for Perception Delta. This is not to say, however, that they are not mainstream, “just that metalheads are a dying breed,” says Srikanth, one of the organizers of Brutal Carnage.

“The point is to revive metal music in Chennai,” he adds. “It is crucial to bring together passionate, driven musicians to showcase what the city has to offer.”
“Coming to Chennai to celebrate our 25th anniversary feels surreal. We’ve evolved so much as a band. Even though we’ve been influenced by a lot of other bands, the sound and the experience of a Demonic Resurrection show remains the same,” he says.
“We are huge fans of Demonic Resurrection. So it’s an honour to be playing alongside them,” says Isaiah Anderson, guitarist for Godia. He explains how the band, during their formative years at the “musically renowned Madras Christian College”, used to track bands like the headliner of the show, drawing inspiration from them. He adds that they were also courageous enough to craft their own sound.
“We get compared to bands like Meshuggah and Tesseract. We get how a metal band needs to engage with the crowd. But who we are is a modern metalcore band,” explains Isaiah.
The warp and weft of the 13th edition of Brutal Carnage is seen and experienced through the unadulterated rawness poured into the performing artists’ body of work. It signals a paradigm shift with respect to prevalent attitudes associated with metal music, deconstructing them one track at a time. All this is achieved while championing the clarion call and raison d’etre of metal: rebellion against pre-existing, oppressive structures of authority.
Demonic Resurrection, Godia, and Perception Delta will be performing live at The Spotted Deer on September 27. The show begins from 7pm. Tickets are available via Metal Chennai’s social media page, as well as at the venue.
