City empties out as people go home for Pongal | Chennai News – The Times of India

Chennai: With a mix of tradition, travel, and quiet streets marking the eve of Pongal, the city slipped into festive mode on Wednesday, as thick Bhogi smog hung over several parts in the morning. Arterial roads such as Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road, and 100-Feet Road were deserted, as several people left for home towns. Govt data says nearly 14 lakh travelled from Chennai on Jan 13 by long-distance govt and private buses, and trains. A similar number is expected on Wednesday night too. Private bus operators said most early and late evening services are fully booked. As the city thinned out, festivities unfolded across Greater Chennai Corporation zones. Samathuva Pongal was celebrated in all 15 GCC zones, marking Pongal as a celebration of nature and labour. Elected representatives, zonal officials, councillors, officers, and staff celebrated with kolams, floral decorations, and freshly-cooked Pongal.
