Girl scripts ISC success story after Pahalgam horror – The Times of India

Kolkata: It was a traumatic week for 17-year-old Subhangi Guha, who lost her father, Samir Guha, in the terrorist attack at Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam, Kashmir. Seeing her father being shot in front of her eyes made her numb.
On Wednesday morning, however, she said she found a purpose again to fulfil the aspirations of her father, who stood by her and supported her in several key decisions of life. Subhangi, who appeared for her ISC board exam this year, expected to score more than 90%. But she had to settle at 87% with her Psychology and Political Science scores pulling back her percentage a bit. She was in the Arts stream.
Sabari Guha, her mother, said Subhangi has already decided not to let the marks deter her ambition – she wants to pursue psychology honours at Loreto College. “At present, she wants to concentrate on her studies. Her dreams, she feels, will be fulfilled once she concentrates on her higher education. As of now, she wants to focus all her energy on this. We hope we will be getting help from the administration so that she can fulfil her dreams,” said Sabari.
On Wednesday, TOI visited her residence and found Subhangi speaking over the phone. “The results upset her a bit as she had higher expectations. But what is important is to look into the future, and she has already started that process,” said one of her relatives. Just like a week ago, several relatives gathered at the Guhas’ Sakherbazar residence, closing ranks and showing their solidarity with the family on this special day. Neighbours too dropped by.
“Subhangi has always been a bright student. We have decided to pool in whatever resources we have locally to ensure that her dream is fulfilled,” said Shankar Roy, the local club president who visited the Guha residence on Wednesday morning.
Sabari, however, appealed to everyone not to spread fake news about her family, which is trying to come to terms with the loss and trauma. “Social media and even media outlets have claimed that we were paid a death claim settlement worth Rs 1.7 crore. This is completely baseless. An officer did visit us, but he clicked photos in our flat without our consent. We have received no cheque,” said Sabari.
The mother and daughter spoke to NIA sleuths earlier, with Sabari reporting that a few people suddenly surrounded them. According to her, they ordered everyone to lie down on the ground, and each of them had a gun. Out of fear, they complied, and then the attackers selectively shot her husband and a few others.
Sabari said they heard two gunshots. Initially, they did not understand what was happening, but soon, they faced gunmen in army fatigues.

Mumbai: Arsh Chaudhari, a student of Navi Mumbai’s St Mary’s ICSE School, has bagged the perfect score along with two others from Jharkhand and Kolkata in the ICSE (Class 10) exam results announced by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) on Wednesday. The three students emerged as all-India toppers with the elusive 100% score. Last year, the highest score stood at 99.8%.
Almost everyone who appeared for ICSE board exam this year from the state have cleared it, with a success rate of 99.9%, similar to 2024, also marginally higher than the national rate of 99.09%. The national results have dropped marginally by 0.4%. Of the 20,385 who scored above 95% in the country, almost one-fourth or 4,756 are from Maharashtra. Meanwhile, though the number of students bagging 95% and above has increased nationally, in the state it has dropped.
After Chaudhari, at least two students from the city— one each from Jamnabai Narsee School (Chitransh Garg) and Smt Sulochanadevi Singhania School (Anmol Pai)— have bagged 99.8% and high scorers from several schools bagged 99.6%. The question papers in both ICSE and ISC had 25% competency-focused questions across subjects, an increase from last year, said Sonal Parmar, principal of Cathedral and John Connon School. The school’s average score for ICSE stood at 93.5% and 83% of the batch of 92 have bagged scores over 90%.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’s daughter Divija secured 92.6%, his wife Amruta Fadnavis said. In a post on X, she said, “Our minds are filled with joy. Our daughter Divija secured 92.60 per cent in Class X Board exams.”
Anjana Roy, head of middle school & ICSE, Dhirubhai Ambani International School, said 84% of the cohort of 32 students scored more than 95%, and 97% more than 90% in this year’s exams. “This year’s analytical exam format was met with confidence, thanks to our faculty’s focused preparation and the students’ strong conceptual understanding,” she added. At JBCN International School, there was a 20% increase in the total number of students scoring an aggregate of 90% and above compared with 2024.
Since last year, the council has refrained from announcing the merit list. Joseph Emmanuel, chief executive and secretary of the council, said they will not be coming out with the merit list henceforth. He said over 80% students in both ICSE and ISC have scored more than 60%, which is a great achievement for the council. “We have seen the performance improving across schools,” he said.
Close to 30,000 students from 270 ICSE schools in Maharashtra appeared for the exam this year, thousand more than in 2024. The western region, comprising Maharashtra and Goa, has outperformed other regions marginally. The success rate of girls in the state is marginally higher than boys’.

FC Goa set up semis date with Mohun Bagan – The Times of India

Put to test against a full-strength Kerala Blasters in Kalinga Super Cup quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon, the reserve team of ISL double winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant came out with flying colours in Bhubaneswar.
The young and Indian-heavy side put up a gritty and spirited display of football at Kalinga Stadium to carve out a 2-1 victory over the Blasters. They booked a place in the semifinals against FC Goa, who made a stunning comeback in the evening game to beat Punjab FC 2-1 with a stoppage-time winner from Mohammed Yasir.
Trailing a spirited Punjab FC till the 89th minute, Goa’s relentless attacks bore fruit when Borja Herrera drew level one minute from regulation time. As the match was heading to shootout to complete the semifinal line-up, Yasir broke Punjab FC’s heart with a jaw-dropping strike three minutes into the second-half added time.
Earlier, Norberto ‘Pulga’ Vidal had put Punjab in the lead with a 57th-minute strike but the Argentine striker’s substitution late into the game backfired for Punjab as it took the pressure off Goa defence.
Meanwhile, for the Mariners Sahal Abdul Samad opened the scoring midway through the first half while Suhail Ahmad Bhat doubled the lead early in the second. Constant pressure from the Blasters put paid when MS Sreekuttan pulled one back four minutes into the second-half added time. But it was too little, too late.
Despite a barrage of attacks made by the Blasters frontline, Bagan stood firm with Nuno Reis – the only foreigner on Bagan roster on Sunday – showing true leadership quality on debut for the Mariners.
The Portuguese centre-back, playing for the Kolkata giants after sitting out for almost eight months, made an instant impact guarding the backline with commendable support from his Indian teammates Dippendu Biswas, Saurabh Bhanwala and Amandeep.
Special mention should be made of goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem, who was like a rolling rock under the bar gathering almost all the balls shot at Bagan goal.
Bagan on the other hand had only three shots on target among the eight shots at goal while Kerala had seven on target among 18 efforts. However, precision and finesse of the Bagan attackers made all the difference.
The first goal was sublime in nature. Player of the match Salahudheen Adnan beat Blasters left-back Naocha Singh with quick twists and turns before sending in a cross into the six-yard box. Sahal finally got the ball, and evading his marker Ruivah Hormipam with a superb first touch, took a turn and chipped it over goalkeeper Sachin Suresh to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute.
India international Ashique Kuruniyan crafted the second goal from the left flank. He sent in an inch-perfect ball into the six-yard box for Suhail, who guided it home with ease. Bagan could have scored their third but for the Glan Martins shot hitting the left post in the dying minutes of the game.
