Azhwars, the mystic saint-poets, immersed themselves entirely in the infinite and auspicious attributes of God and, through their divine experiences, blessed humanity with sacred hymns. To express the many dimensions of their devotion, the Azhwars established various spiritual relationships with the Lord, each revealing a unique facet of bhakti.
In a discourse, Dr. Venkatesh explained their devotion through various bhavas (devotional moods). One such mood is Saanta Bhavam, the devotion of serene contemplation and inner tranquility.
Tirumazhisai Piran, in his Thiruchanda Virutham, renowned for its musical cadence, exemplifies this Saanta Bhavam. He perceives the Lord as the Antaryaami, the indwelling controller who governs all states of existence — including sleep, ignorance, and the awakening of wisdom.
Tirumangai Azhwar beautifully expresses Sakhya Bhavam (the devotional mood of friendship) in Periya Thirumozhi. In this bhava, the devotee relates to God as an intimate and trusted friend. Tirumangai Azhwar affectionately pleads with Lord Ranganatha, addressing Him as Sri Rama, and seeks acceptance not as a distant worshipper but as a close companion, just as Sri Rama lovingly accepted Guha, the tribal chieftain, as His dear friend.
Dasya Bhavam (the devotional mood of servitude) is expressed by Tirumangai Azhwar, who humbly requests the Lord to accept him as His servant. In this mood, the Azhwar seeks the same grace with which Sri Rama accepted Hanuman — the ideal servant whose life was wholly dedicated to the Lord’s service.
Kulasekhara Azhwar beautifully expresses Vatsalya Bhavam (parental love) in Perumal Tirumozhi. Assuming the role of Mother Kausalya, he lovingly sings a lullaby to Lord Rama, revealing a devotion filled with tender affection and intimacy.
Mathurya Bhavam (Bridal Mysticism): In this, the devotee transforms into a feminine mood. Nammazhwar expressed his love towards God as Parankusa Nayaki.
