An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck off southern Chile and Argentina on Friday (May 2, 2025), prompting the evacuation of the Chilean coastline throughout the Magallanes region and the suspension of water activities and navigation in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego Province.

No damage or casualties were initially reported.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake’s epicentre was under the ocean 219 km south of the Argentine city of Ushuaia.

Chilean authorities issued an evacuation alert for the entire coastal section of the Strait of Magellan, in the far south of the country.

Due to a “tsunami alert, evacuation to a safe zone is being ordered for the coastal sectors of the Magallanes region”, Chile’s National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response said in a message sent to the public.

It also requested that all beach areas in the Chilean Antarctic territory be abandoned.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric wrote on X that “all resources are available” to respond to potential emergencies. “We are calling for the evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region,” Mr. Boric wrote. “Right now, our duty is to be prepared and heed the authorities.”

In Punta Arenas, located in Chilean Patagonia and on the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the streets quickly filled with residents searching for shelters, according to images broadcast on local television. Many of them were carrying bags.

The evacuation proceeded calmly and without panic. “We received the alert and we had to evacuate at work, but people are calm and well prepared,” Roberto Ramírez told the 24-hour channel.

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy, or SHOA, reported that waves could reach Antarctica as early as next hour, while it could take up to 12 hours to reach more remote locations.

In the Argentine city of Ushuaia, considered the world’s southernmost, local authorities suspended all types of water activities and navigation in the Beagle Channel for at least three hours. No material damage or evacuations were reported.

“The earthquake was felt primarily in the city of Ushuaia and, to a lesser extent, in towns across the Province,” the local government reported. “In the face of these types of events, it is important to remain calm.”

Defence pact with India to be presented in parliament, says Sri Lankan president | – The Times of India

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said that the defence pact with India would be presented in parliament soon. Dissanayake was responding to opposition criticism that his NPP government had entered a secret defence pact with India when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6 and has been demanding that the MoU be revealed.
“They are creating false narratives. These are imaginary monsters created by them without seeing it. There are agreements between the countries, they are open for both sides. It is our responsibility to ensure our own security. This has been stated in a clause in the agreement”, Dissanayake said during a TV talk show Friday night.
Dissanayake had ensured Sri Lanka’s consistent position that its soil would not be allowed to be used for any anti-Indian activity so as to endanger its giant neighbour’s national security concerns.
Modi, in his banquet speech, had thanked Dissanayake for this position.
The opposition has riled the National People’s Power (NPP) for signing pacts with India as its mother party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in 1987-90 had led a bloody rebellion to protest a direct Indian intervention in Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority issue.
The Rajiv Gandhi-Jayawardena signed Indo Lanka Peace Accord brought in constitutional changes prescribing a council for each of Sri Lanka’s nine provinces. The JVP led a violent campaign against anyone who supported the Indo-Lanka accord until they came to be militarily crushed in late 1989.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation between India and Sri Lanka signed on April 5 during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the island nation will remain in force for five years.
It is for the first time that India and Sri Lanka have inked a major defence pact to institutionalise a framework for deeper engagement in the military domain.
“India annually trains around 750 Sri Lankan military personnel. This defence partnership continues to be an invaluable asset,” Sri Lanka’s defence secretary Thuiyakontha had said after it was signed.
“As part of the cooperation under this MoU, both parties are committed to respecting each other’s military and national laws, as well as the principles and purposes of the UN Charter-including sovereign equality and non-intervention in internal affairs,” Thuiyakontha had said.

Temu halts shipping goods from China directly to US customers – Times of India

Published

on

Temu, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has stopped shipping products directly from China to US customers. Instead, all orders will now be fulfilled from warehouses within the United States, a company spokesperson confirmed Friday.
The move comes following the closure of a provision that previously permitted Chinese-made products valued up to $800 to enter the United States without import duties, according to The New York Times.
The exemption, which President Donald Trump described as a “big scam” detrimental to American small businesses, concluded on Friday.
After Trump announced plans to end the “de minimis” loophole, which let goods under $800 enter the US without tariffs, Temu said last month it would adjust its prices. De minimis is a Latin term, which loosely translates to English as “of the smallest”.
The company began implementing import fees for US customers purchasing Chinese items last week, occasionally resulting in price increases exceeding double the original cost.
This regulation has significantly affected international retailers, particularly Chinese online platforms like Shein and Temu, who are now subject to substantial duties.
Recently, customers observed the removal of numerous Chinese products from Temu’s website, leaving only items shipped from domestic warehouses.
The company stated Friday that US consumer pricing “remains unchanged as the platform transitions to a local fulfillment model.”
“All sales in the US are now handled by locally based sellers, with orders fulfilled from within the country,” the company spokesperson said in a statement.
“Temu has been actively recruiting US sellers to join the platform. The move is designed to help local merchants reach more customers and grow their businesses. This shift is part of Temu’s ongoing adjustments to improve service levels,” they added.

At the Consulate General of India in Shanghai, Consul General Pratik Mathur, along with consulate officers, staff, friends of India, and diaspora members, led the gathering in offering condolences.

“Officers and officials of CGI Shanghai, friends of India and members of Indian diaspora led by Consul General @PratikMathur1 offered deepest and heartfelt condolences to the victims of the #PahalgamTerroristAttack today in the Consulate,” stated a post by the Consulate on social media platform X, dated April 30.

Photographs of the victims were displayed during the meeting as a mark of respect.

Similarly, the Indian Consulate in Guangzhou organised a condolence meeting to pay tribute to the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.

“The sombre gathering included over 60 members of the Indian diaspora, Consulate officials and their family members, as well as friends of India. Despite the long ‘Labour Day’ holidays, participants across various regions, faiths, languages and age groups joined in solidarity to condemn the heinous act and stand in unity against terrorism. Many people also joined virtually to pay their tributes,” the Guangzhou Consulate posted on X on Friday.

Consul General Shambhu Hakki addressed the gathering, briefing them on the tragic incident, it said.

“The participants also watched the video clips of the human stories regarding the tragic event and expressed their heartfelt prayers for the victims and their family members by offering flower tributes, and by writing messages in the ‘Condolence Book’ that was opened at the Consulate,” the mission said.

Terrorists opened fire in Pahalgam on April 22, killing 26 people, in the deadliest attack in the Valley since the Pulwama strike in 2019. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for the attack.
