The Department of Animal Husbandry started the vaccination of stray dogs and pets for rabies in the district on Tuesday.
As the stray dog menace in the district has crossed all tolerable limits with the local bodies refusing to take any action to control the population of dogs, and incidents of dog bite in almost every part of the district has become a daily affair. After the summer vacation which has started recently, the children became the victims.
After District Collector K. Elambahavath was flooded with requests for controlling the dog population by animal birth control (ABC), the Department of Animal Husbandry had been directed to administer the anti-rabies vaccine to the stray dogs while the rural and urban civic bodies have been instructed to start the ABC.
As the veterinarians of the Department of Animal Husbandry started the drive on Tuesday, 24 street dogs and 14 pets were vaccinated for rabies.
