Bhubaneswar: There has been an uptick in the sales of premium cars, including hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs, in Odisha in the first half of this year.According to data from the regional transport offices (RTOs), a total of 37,198 premium vehicles were registered from Jan to June, a notable increase compared to 35,201 registered in the same period last year.Parivahan portal data revealed that Maruti Suzuki leads the sales chart, followed closely by Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Kia India. The monthly breakdown shows 7,670 vehicles were registered in Jan, 5,154 in Feb, 6,603 in March, 6,240 in April, 5,569 in May and 5,962 in June. Additionally, from July 1 to 7, another 1,326 vehicles were registered, indicating an upward trend. The surge in sales has been attributed to several factors, including improved road infrastructure and increased disposable income. The pursuit of comfort is another primary reason for the rise in sale of four-wheelers, experts said.Electric vehicles (EVs) also saw a rise in sales, with 2,479 units registered in the first half of 2025. Jan saw 381 EVs registered, followed by 314 in Feb, 433 in March, 449 in April, 424 in May and 478 in June. The growth reflects a gradual shift towards more sustainable mobility options.Bhubaneswar RTO recorded the highest number of sales, followed by Cuttack, Bhubaneswar II, Rourkela and Sambalpur. Srikant Rath, an automobile engineer, noted the visible increase in SUVs on the roads, attributing it to improved road conditions and rising incomes.“Improved road infrastructure and increased income levels are significant contributors to the higher sales of four-wheelers in Odisha,” said Rath, emphasising that these factors have made owning a car more accessible and appealing to residents.Nayam Kumar, a recent owner of a premium SUV, said, “I decided to buy the car for the comfort and convenience of my family, especially considering the varying weather conditions.”As Odisha continues to develop its infrastructure and the economic landscape evolves, the trend of rising premium car sales is expected to persist, reflecting the growing affluence and changing consumer preferences, experts said.
