Under Fire Over Hindi Imposition, Maharashtra Nixes Three-Language Policy Resolutions, Orders Fresh Review
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday announced that the Government Resolutions (GRs) issued on April 16 and June 17 concerning the three-language policy have been cancelled. He added that a new committee, led by Dr. Narendra Jadhav, will be formed to review the matter.
Addressing a press conference, CM Fadnavis informed that in the cabinet meeting held on Sunday, the decision to form the committee was reached. He added that based on the report submitted by the committee, the state government will make a final decision on the implementation of the language policy.
The committee, headed by the former Planning Commission member Dr. Narendra Jadhav, will prepare a report on the trilingual policy formula, keeping the interest of Marathi students at the centre.
IANS quoted CM Fadnavis as saying, “Today in the Cabinet meeting, we discussed the three-language policy. We have decided that a committee will be formed under the leadership of Dr. Narendra Jadhav to determine from which standard the languages should be implemented, how the implementation should take place, and what choices should be given to students… Based on the report submitted by this committee, the state government will make a final decision on the implementation of the three-language policy.”
“Until then, both the Government Resolutions (GRs) issued on 16th April 2025 and 17th June 2025 have been cancelled,” he added.

The Maharashtra government’s announcement of scrapping the proposals comes amid protests against the implementation of Hindi from Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English schools, and the joint front organised by Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray on July 5.
Govt Resolutions
The April 16 GR had proposed Hindi to be a compulsory third language in Marathi and English schools for classes 1 to 5. However, it was put on hold after protests from various quarters. Following this, a revised government resolution on June 17 was issued, whereby Marathi has been made mandatory in all schools while Hindi is optional.
CM Targets Uddhav Thackeray
CM Fadnavis launched a scathing attack on Uddhav Thackeray, saying that Thackeray had supported the three-language policy when he was the chief minister but now he is “doing politics” on the issue.
“The three-language formula introduced in the education policy was supported even by Uddhav Thackeray when he was the Chief Minister. He had formed a committee that recommended making Hindi, Marathi, and English compulsory. That report was accepted by Uddhav Thackeray’s cabinet, and it even bears his signature. Now, they are doing politics over the very same issue,” the CM said.
The Narendra Jadhav-led committee has reportedly sought a three-month time limit for preparing the report.
