Former Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district K. Vidyakumari said on Wednesday that the “Communal” tag attached to Udupi district has been removed, and the district did not face any law and order issues during the past two years.

Speaking at her farewell after handing over the charge to the new Deputy Commissioner, T. K. Swaroopa, Ms. Vidyakumari said that K. Arun, the former Superintendent of Police of Udupi, who is now the police chief of Dakshina Kannada, had bagged the first IGP Award for effectively managing law and order.

“Udupi had the ‘communal’ tag. It was removed recently. It is a feel-good matter,” Ms. Vidyakumari said, giving credit to the police force headed by Mr. Arun.

“Police did enough background work and homework to curb the communal incidents. Any communally related issues were nipped in the bud. We did not face a single law and order problem,” Ms. Vidyakumari said.

She said that the police, under the leadership of Mr. Arun, also ended the illegal sand extraction and transportation in the district by extending cooperation to the district administration.

“Unless police cooperated, it would have been difficult for the district administration to handle the illegal sand extraction and transport issues,” she said.

In her address, Ms. Swaroopa asked officials to be sensitive to the problems faced by people and to maintain team spirit.
