The city police have identified two persons who allegedly posted inflammatory social media posts and registered separate cases against them.
In a press note, the Urwa police said one Manish Kumar, a resident of Ashok Nagar, was found to have posted an image of 30-year-old Suhas Shetty, who was murdered on May 1, on the instagram pages of VHP Ashoknagar and Shankanaada. Along with these images, he had posted statements provoking enmity among communities, the police said..
The Kavoor police found one Hasan Bava, a resident of Kinnipadavu, posting on WhatsApp group a false news that Suhas Shetty was murdered to mask involvement of a close confidant of Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty in mob lynching of 38-year-old Ashraf.
The police said they have issued notices asking Kumar and Bava to appear before the investigation officers for questioning.
Meanwhile, two new cases related to posting inflammatory posts on social media were registered by social media monitoring cells of Moodbidri and Mulki police stations.
In the compliant registered at the Moodbidri Police station, police constable Venkatesh said he saw a post from +91849 on the ‘Mangaluru Muslim Yuva Sena’ whatsapp group stating that attempts to murder seven persons, including autorickshaw driver Aboobacker in Udupi, were made in response to murder of Suhas Shetty on May 1.
In the compliant registered at Mulki Police Station, a constable from Station’s Social Media Monitoring Cell said he saw a post on ‘Troll_bengre_ro_Makka’ instagram page threatening life of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Puttur division convenor Bharath Kumdelu, who is prime accused in murder of a SDPI activist in June 2017.
Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal said the city police have registered more than 30 cases for posting inflammatory posts on social media in the last over a week and identified some who have posted them. This action has brought down the number of inflammatory posts on the social media, he said.
