This is the story of a captivating actress who shared the screen with several superstars and earned immense fame in her career. But when it came to her personal life, it was filled only with sorrow, pain, and loneliness. Imagine the life of a woman whose marriage was never completed because her fiancé passed away before the wedding.

Yes, this actress got engaged, but fate had other plans; her fiancé died before they could marry, and she lived the rest of her life like a widow. One can only imagine how lonely the personal life of such a successful actress must have been.

This actress was none other than Nanda, who starred opposite Manoj Kumar in the hit film Shor. She appeared in over 70 films in her Bollywood career. Known for her beauty and grace, Nanda was deeply respected in the industry. Even Dilip Kumar’s wife, Saira Banu, once said Nanda was like a family member to her. Sadly, Nanda is no longer with us—she passed away on March 25, 2014, in Mumbai at the age of 75.

About Nanda

Nanda’s real name was Nandini Karnataki. She was born on January 8, 1939, and became known to the world as Nanda. In addition to Hindi films, she also acted in Marathi cinema. She came from a Maharashtrian family deeply rooted in the film industry—her father was a Marathi actor and filmmaker. While her brothers were also part of the industry, they worked behind the scenes as cinematographers, not actors.

Nanda also had a family connection with renowned filmmaker V. Shantaram, who was her paternal uncle. Life took a tragic turn when Nanda was just seven years old—her father passed away, leaving the family in financial distress. To support them, Nanda began working as a child artist in films, and the money she earned helped her family get through those difficult times.

Debut:

Nanda made her debut in the 1948 film Mandir. From 1948 to 1956, she worked as a child artist. Her big break as a lead actress came in 1956, thanks to her uncle and renowned filmmaker V. Shantaram, who cast her in Toofan Aur Deeya, a film based on the bond between a brother and sister.

She soon transitioned to adult roles and gained critical attention with the film Bhabhi, which earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress. From there, her career took off, and she went on to appear in several hit films such as Chhoti Bahen, Hum Dono, Kanoon, Aanchal, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Aashiq, Beti, Ittefaq, Shor, Umeed, Parineeta, Adhikar, Mazboor, and Prem Rog.

At her peak, Nanda was among the highest-paid actresses of her time. One of her most memorable roles was in Jab Jab Phool Khile, opposite Shashi Kapoor. The film told the story of a rich girl and a poor boy, and it became a classic love story of its time.

Personal life:

Nanda’s professional career was a huge success, but her personal life was filled with its own set of emotions. In the 1970s, Nanda fell in love with a married director and producer, none other than the famous masala film king, Manmohan Desai. He was married to Jivanprabha, who passed away in April 1979. They had a son, Ketan Desai, who later entered the film industry. Ketan married Kanchan Kapoor, the daughter of Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali.

Once, Nanda’s brother Jayprakash spoke about Nanda and Manmohan Desai’s love story. In an interview with Pinkvilla, he revealed that Waheeda Rehman also played a role in their love story. She had planned a dinner to bring the two together and left them alone so that the filmmaker could express his feelings to Nanda. During that dinner, Manmohan Desai confessed to Nanda that he wanted to marry her.

Lived as a widow:

Nanda’s brother revealed that the marriage proposal from Manmohan Desai was made simply and humbly. After some contemplation, Nanda called Waheeda Rehman and agreed to the relationship.

After the engagement, tragedy struck as Nanda’s fiancé, Manmohan Desai, passed away. The engagement with Manmohan was finalized in 1992, and Nanda, who was a very private and shy person, had envisioned a happy life with him. However, just two years after the engagement, Manmohan Desai’s sudden death shattered Nanda completely, leaving her heartbroken.

Saira Banu and Nanda’s relationship:

Saira Banu and Nanda shared a close bond, both personally and professionally, despite being in different generations of the Bollywood industry. Saira, a prominent actress of the 60s and 70s, had great admiration for Nanda, who was one of the leading actresses of her time, known for her beauty, grace, and versatile performances.

Saira once expressed how she always looked up to Nanda, considering her not only as a co-actor but also as a part of her family. Saira referred to Nanda as a member of her own family, highlighting the warmth and affection they shared. Their friendship was strengthened by the mutual respect they had for each other’s work in the industry.

Nirmal Kapoor, the mother of Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, and Boney Kapoor, died on May 2. She was 90 years old and was the wife of the late film producer Surinder Kapoor. She is a mother to four children, Boney, Anil, Sanjay, and Reena Kapoor Marwah. As per news reports, Nirmal died in Mumbai and was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital. Kapoor family members were spotted arriving outside Boney’s Mumbai residence on Friday afternoon after they got the news of her demise.

Janhvi Kapoor arrives with Shikhar Pahariya

In the viral videos, Janhvi Kapoor was seen outside the premises and was busy on her phone texting someone. She was seen talking to her rumoured boyfriend Shikhar Pahariya, who was standing by her side. He was spotted in an arm rest, may be due to an injury on his left hand. Janhvi and Shikhar were talking outside the main door of the house. Boney Kapoor was also seen outside the main entrance as he was talking to other people.

Last year, Anil celebrated his mother’s 90th birthday and wished his mother on X account by sharing happy family pictures. He captioned the post as, “90 years of love, strength, and endless sacrifices. Your presence fills our lives with joy and positivity every day. Blessed to be your child. Happy birthday, Mummy! ❤️”

On the work front, Janhvi will be seen in Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound and the film will have a world premiere at Cannes Film Festival at the Un Certain Regard section in May. Janhvi along with cast of the film including Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa will be attending the premiere.

Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor‘s mother Nirmal Kapoor who was 90 years of age has passed away on May 2. She was reportedly admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital and has passed away due to age related issues.
According to a report by Film Information, she breathed her last at around 5:45 pm at the hospital. As of now, none of the members of the Kapoor family have yet confirmed this news.
As she passed away, paparazzo Viral Bhayani shared visuals from the Kapoor residence. One could see Boney Kapoor with daughter Anshula Kapoor gathered there. Janhvi Kapoor was also seen arriving with boyfriend Shikhar Pahariya.
Nirmal Kapoor celebrated her 90th birthday in September 2024. Anil Kapoor had shared pictures with his mother and wished her on Instagram with the caption, “90 years of love, strength, and endless sacrifices. Your presence fills our lives with joy and positivity every day. Blessed to be your child. Happy birthday, Mummy!”
Nirmal Kapoor was married to Surinder Kapoor who was a well-known film producer. They have four children – Anil Kapoor, Reena Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor.
Nirmal’s grandchildren include, Sonam Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Janhvi, Khushi and Anshula, Arjun Kapoor, Shanaya Kapoor, Jahaan Kapoor. Meanhile, Nirmal’s daughter Reena Kapoor has a son, Mohit Marwah.
A while ago, when Anil Kapoor had appeared on a reality show during the promotions of his film ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ with Kiara Advani, Varun Dhawan and Neetu Kapoor, he had gotten emotional remembering his mother. He had seen a contestant named Mani and his mother and looking at them, he was reminded of the time his mother would stitch clothes for him.
He had gotten emotional and said, “Mani ko dekh kar, unki mata ji ko dekh kar, mujhe mera bachpan yaad aagaya. Wo machine yaad aagayi. Sewing machine thi, haath se bhi chalti thi, paanv se bhi chalti thi. Jis tarah aap ye pant aur shirt banati hai, mere liye bhi meri mummy banati thi. Aaj main yaha baitha hoon. Aap bhi bohot bade banoge.”

Telugu superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni headlined a session on the rise and rise of Pan-India filmmaking at the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in BKC, Mumbai on Friday (May 2). He was joined in the panel by veteran Anupam Kher, Tamil actor Karthi and actor-politician Kushboo Sundar.

Anatomising the success of recent Pan-India juggernauts like Pushpa, Baahubali and KGF — all big-budget productions originating from the South — Nagarjuna argued that such films worked because audiences in India love larger-than-life heroes.

He pointed out that both the Pushpa films made more money in the North than in Telugu centres. “We have seen similar stories in Telugu before, like Pushpa, which has larger-than-life heroes. Whereas in the North — in Bihar, UP, and Punjab — they wanted to see their heroes like Pushpa Raj, Yash in KGF or Baahubali. For Indian people and culture, just living day to day is difficult, and when they want to overcome the stress by watching films, they want to see magic on screen,” Nagarjuna said.

The trailer for Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa 2: The Rule was launched in Patna, Bihar, while Rocky bhai — the protagonist played by Yash in the megahit Kannada franchise KGF — became a pop-cultural phenomenon across the North. These films exude a rooted, rustic heroism that stands apart from Hollywood gloss, yet manage to transport viewers to a fantasy world.

“Allu Arjun was a star in the North for ten years before Pushpa happened. It wasn’t an overnight success,” Karthi said.

Pan-Indian films are offering big-screen escapism without moving away from their native roots, observed Nagarjuna. “That’s what the larger-than-life stories are doing, without losing the fundamentals of Indian storytelling. They are not going away from that, which is why they have been successful. Rajamouli shot Baahubali, frame to frame, thinking it was a Telugu film. He was very proud of his roots and language, and he shot it like a Telugu film, and people loved it across the world! If you are rooted to your storytelling, it will resonate,” Nagarjuna said.

Anupam Kher held forth on the universality of compelling storytelling. “Ingrid Bergman, the famous Swedish actress, said it amazingly,” Kher commented. “She said that any film, any story, which is from the heart will touch the audience, not the craft. Craft never touches the audience but the truth.”

Kher gave the example of James Cameron’s Titanic and how Hollywood attempted to turn it into a formula, but failed. “He (Cameron) made a love story set against a disaster. So American producers thought, let’s make another love story set against a bigger disaster. So they made Pearl Harbour. But that film became a disaster in itself.”

Nagarjuna stressed that mass filmmaking in India operates within its own logic. “You might say, ‘A guy raises his fist and 20 people fall, it looks abnormal!’ But if you like Marvel or DC films, Superman does the same thing, but they give the logic of them having ‘super powers’. But we don’t need those special powers! The common man, the ticket-paying audience, including me, wants to watch my heroes larger than life.”
