Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns citing medical issues

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar (74) resigned from his post citing health reasons on Monday (July 21, 2025), the first day of the Monsoon Session which he presided over in the Rajya Sabha as Chairman of the House. Mr Dhankhar had been elected as India’s 14th Vice-President in August 2022, and has two years left for his term to complete. While two other Vice-Presidents of India — V.V. Giri in 1969, and R. Venkatraman in 1987, had quit without finishing their terms, it was to become President of India.
