South Korea explores business opportunities in Coimbatore

South Korean businesses have evinced interest in Coimbatore to strengthen business tie ups and also for investments, according to industry representatives here.

Heads of industry associations in Coimbatore had a meeting with the Korean Consul General and representatives of Korean Trade Promotion Organisation recently. A South Korean delegation participated in the agriculture expo organised by the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association here last year.

“We hear that a large number of Korean companies have invested in and around Chennai and there are even restaurants that serve Korean cuisine. There are especially Korean automobile suppliers who have set shop in the State. Maybe a few South Korean companies are looking for opportunities in Coimbatore too,” said M. Karthikeyan, president of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association.

An official source told The Hindu that one of the Korean companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Coimbatore company recently. There were opportunities for joint ventures in multiple fields, the official said.

Mr. Karthikeyan said that at the recent meeting in Coimbatore, the strengths and opportunities in Coimbatore were highlighted. Though there were discussions related to investments in Coimbatore during the agriculture expo last year, there had not been any notable progress after that, he said.
