Welcoming “significant progress” in talks for a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. Vice-President James David (JD) Vance met in Delhi on Monday (April 21, 2025), and reviewed plans for India-U.S. cooperation, the Prime Minister’s Office said. Mr. Modi, who met with Mr. Vance along with senior officials from both sides, before hosting Mr. Vance, wife Usha Chilukuri Vance and their children for dinner at his residence. However, they didn’t announce any new agreements, nor launch the TRUST Technology Partnership as had been earlier expected, as Mr. Modi said he looked forward to U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to India “later this year”, when India will host the U.S.-India-Japan-Australia Quad Summit.

Talks for a BTA, that were announced during Mr. Modi’s meeting with Mr. Trump in February, went into the next round in Washington on Monday, as a delegation of trade negotiators from the Commerce Ministry travelled to the U.S. While both sides have discussed “zero for zero tariffs” in a number of areas for the first tranche of the BTA due to be announced during Mr. Trump’s India visit, there is little indication of a breakthrough on issues such as market access in agriculture, and the revocation of the digital equalisation levy and other measures by India, so far.

Mr. Modi also discussed the India-U.S. road map that seeks to build on Mr. Trump’s “Make America Great Again (MAGA)” slogan and New Delhi’s plans for “Viksit Bharat (Developed India) 2047”, the statement said. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were present at the talks at the Prime Minister’s residence, along with senior U.S. officials, and U.S. Charge d’Affaires Jorgan Andrews.

“[The leaders] welcomed the significant progress in the negotiations for a mutually beneficial India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement focused on the welfare of the people of the two countries,” the PMO said in its statement. “They noted continued efforts towards enhancing cooperation in energy, defence, strategic technologies and other areas.” The statement made no mention on whether the leaders discussed more testy issues, including U.S. tariffs, and a crackdown on student visas by the Trump administration which may force many Indians to return without completing their studies.

“The two leaders also exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest and called for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward,” the statement said, but did not mention specifically whether the Ukraine war or the conflict in Gaza were discussed.

Pope Francis’ demise

Earlier, the visit had some uncertain moments as news came in of Pope Francis’ sudden demise in the Vatican, leading to questions about whether Mr. Vance, a Catholic, who had met the Pope only on Sunday after Easter mass, would curtail his plans, or whether the Prime Minister would put off the official dinner. However, the visit proceeded as scheduled, with Mr. Vance writing a post on X just after learning of the Pope’s passing.

“I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill,” Mr. Vance said, expressing condolences.

Mr. Vance, his family and the U.S. delegation consisting of U.S. NSC point-person for South and Central Asia Ricky Gill, Pentagon and State department officials had landed in Delhi’s Palam airport on Monday morning, where he was received by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Mr. Vance and Ms. Usha Vance then brought their two sons, Ewan and Vivek, and daughter Mirabel off the plane dressed in Indian clothes. Although an earlier plan to visit the Red Fort was cancelled, the Vances went to the Akshardham temple and then shopped at the government-owned Cottage Emporium for Indian handicrafts.

The Vances will spend Tuesday in Jaipur at private engagements and cultural events, as well as a visit to the Amer Fort and the U.S. Vice-President will give a public address at the Rajasthan International Centre in the afternoon. Ministry of External Affairs nor the U.S. Embassy officials denied reports that they will attend a wedding in Jaipur, where security has “locked down” the city’s Rambagh palace hotel and all other guests have been turned away. On Wednesday, they will visit the Taj Mahal monument in Agra before returning to Jaipur the same day and flying back to the U.S. on Thursday. They are, however, not visiting Ms. Usha Vance’s family in India, according to members of the extended Chilukuri family in Visakhapatnam and Chennai, who told The Hindu that they had not been informed of the visit in advance, nor was any meeting planned.

Villupuram Member of Parliament D. Ravikumar has urged the Railway Board to approve the detailed project report (DPR) for the doubling of the Villupuram-Thanjavur section, with some variations.

Mr. Ravikumar placed this demand before the Southern Railway, as a follow-up to the annual meeting of the Southern Railway with Members of Parliament in Trichy on Wednesday (April 23, 2025) to discuss railway-related developmental activities, issues, and passenger amenities.

In a letter addressed to the Southern Railway General Manager, Mr. Ravikumar pointed out that the trains being operated on this section run with high occupancy rate. The occupancy of Villupuram-Cuddalore is 82% and Cuddalore-Mayiladuthurai is 91%, he said.

Stating that the route also witnessed heavy freight movement, providing more revenue to the Railways, he said that priority should be given to the doubling work. The MP also urged the Railway administration to hold consultations with the State government and provide alternate housing for families who had built houses near the Villupuram junction and Valavanur station.

He said that a notice was issued to the residents asking them to vacate the land owned by the Railways, as the administration had leased it to private individuals on a long-term basis. The residents have filed a case and obtained an injunction against the railway administration’s order.

Asking these long-term residents to vacate without providing alternative accommodation is unacceptable. The administration should consult the State government to ensure these families are provided with alternate housing, he said.

Mr. Ravikumar’s letter also contained demands for providing escalator facilities at Villupuram junction; introduction of EMU services at Villupuram; stoppage of Tejas Express at Villupuram; additional coaches for Puducherry to Madras Express; introduction of battery cards at the Tirukoyilur and Uludurpet platforms; passenger amenities at Ulundurpet, Tindivanam, and Tirukoyilur stations; stoppage of Tirupati-Rameswaram Express; priority for local residents in leasing railway property; and revival of special fares for senior citizens and journalists.

IPL 2025: Can Misfiring SRH Overpower Resurgent Mumbai Indians?

IPL 2025: Can Misfiring SRH Overpower Resurgent Mumbai Indians?

Hyderabad: The misfiring Sunrisers Hyderabad will hope for a happy homecoming when they take on a resurrected Mumbai Indians here on Wednesday, eyeing a much-needed victory to revive their campaign in the Indian Premier League.

With only two wins in seven outings, SRH are in a desperate situation. Their power-packed batting has let them down more often than not while their bowlers are not making any strong impression either.

That SRH are a one-dimensional side has been proven by the manner in which it has struggled on slow and turning pitches.

SRH batters thrive on flat wickets which produce high-scoring contests and having a favourable surface against MI would give the them the best chance to find some momentum.

Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head will have their task cut out against MI given SRH’s chances of winning hinge, to a large extent, on the left-handed opening pair. Their success in the powerplay defines the team’s fortunes in a contest.

Abhishek smacked a 55-ball 141 in his last outing here against Punjab Kings to record the highest individual total for any batter in this IPL.

There will be, however, some concerns around Head who hasn’t gone all guns blazing like he usually does and SRH will want their Australian star to be at the top of his game.

A defeat would put SRH in a tough situation.

For Mumbai Indians, it is a perfect opportunity to test their resurgence in an away game before they return home to face Lucknow Super Giants in Mumbai on Sunday.

Mumbai Indians have put their disappointing start to the IPL behind with three consecutive wins.

The five-time champions are coming off a massive nine-wicket hammering of Chennai Super Kings on a batting-friendly wicket on which they went over the line chasing a target near 180 with more than four overs to spare.

Rohit Sharma’s sensational 76 not out and Suryakumar Yadav’s 68 not out with all his trademark shots coming out fluently signalled the return to form of MI’s two batting pillars.

Tilak Varma did not get to bat against CSK but the left-hander has been in prime form, while Naman Dhir has shown signs of hitting his strides as a finisher alongside skipper Hardik Pandya.

Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t been at his menacing best when it comes to taking wickets but the ace India bowler has begun nailing his line and lengths perfectly.

This could be a warning sign for the SRH batters given MI tend to use Bumrah more strategically, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar sharing the new ball.

Head-to-head record:

Mumbai Indians boasts a good head-to-head record against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team has won 14 out of their 24 matches.

In their last encounter in Mumbai on a tricky Wankhede pitch favored the hosts as MI registered a four-wicket win exposing SRH’s frailties in challenging conditions.

Winning Probability:

The pitch at the Ragiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal is traditionally flat and a batting haven. The nature of the surface could have a bearing on the outcome with SRH’s two wins here coming on flat decks ensuring run-fests in their contests against Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings earlier. However, the Pat Cummins-led outfit has lost two home matches too.

A confident Mumbai, on the other hand, is improving by the day. With the addition of Bumrah and Rohit Sharma finding form, Hardik-led side would be walking into the game as favorites.
