SHGs Key to state’s Tn Goal: Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the state government will take responsibility for setting up rice mills and warehouses by Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in every mandal. He said that empowering women SHGs is the key for achieving his vision of making Telangana a “$1 trillion economy.”

He added that the Congress government was committed to strengthening women SHGs, ensuring the state’s rise as a “one trillion economy.” He stated that women SHGs would be entrusted with the responsibility of storing paddy purchased at Indira Kranthi Patham centres in these warehouses, milling it, and supplying it to the state government and FCI.

Speaking at the Indira Mahila Shakti Sabha, held as part of the International Women’s Day organised by the state government at Parade Ground in Secunderabad on Saturday, Reddy reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to strengthen women SHGs.

He said that his government has already disbursed ₹21,000 crore in zero-interest loans to financially empower women in the last one year. To further expand SHG membership, the eligibility age for women to join has been lowered from 18 to 15 years, while the upper limit has been raised from 60 to 65 years. He stated that this move aims to increase SHG membership from the current 65 lakh to one crore.

“Our goal is to make one crore women crorepatis,” Reddy declared, adding that he takes great pride in being called ‘Revanth Anna’ by women, seeing it as a responsibility to uplift them.

He emotionally expressed that just as past generations called Indira Gandhi “Amma” and NTR “Anna,” women in Telangana now call him ‘Revanth Anna,’ which he considers is a great responsibility.

The Chief Minister criticised millers for exploiting paddy from IKP centres without proper accounting. To counter this, he announced that the government would provide land and financial assistance to women SHGs for establishing rice mills and warehouses in every mandal.

Reddy announced that nutritional food for students in residential schools and colleges would be sourced from women SHGs and directed the chief secretary A. Santhi Kumari and SERP CEO to formulate a policy for this initiative.

Accusing his predecessor K. Chandrasekhar Rao of totally neglecting women SHGs during his ten-year regime, Reddy remarked that the metaphoric “Chandra grahanam’ (lunar eclipse) over women SHGs and girls has ended in the state. He criticised the BRS government for restricting SHG women from reaching even mandal headquarters. He credited the formation of the Congress government 15 months ago to the blessings of women, asserting that women are now witnessing light and freedom.

The Chief Minister said that his government has ensured timely payments for women managing IKP centres, which was a major shift from the past. He also noted that solar power projects, previously controlled by corporate entities like Adani and Ambani, are now being entrusted to women SHGs in Telangana. Under this initiative, women SHGs will operate 1,000 MW solar plants and sell electricity to the state power department.
Reddy further announced that RTC bus lease agreements, previously benefiting Rao’s close associates, are now being allocated to women associations. So far, 1,000 buses, including 150 electric buses, have been leased to SHGs.

To expand their business opportunities, 150 retail outlets near Hi-Tech City in Gachibowli—adjacent to major corporate offices like Infosys and Wipro—have been allocated to women SHGs. The government will provide tax exemptions and financial aid for raw material procurement to support these businesses, he assured.

Praising the legacy of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in promoting women’s reservations, he promised that if women SHG members develop leadership skills, they will be given opportunities in politics. He pledged to allocate 33 per cent of MLA and MP seats to women in future elections and assured support for their electoral success.

Marking the occasion, the Chief Minister distributed bank linkage cheques worth ₹22,793 crore and accident insurance cheques worth ₹44.80 crore to women SHGs.

He also virtually inaugurated solar power plants managed by SHGs and launched the Indira Mahila Shakti Mission 2025 Policy. This policy aims to financially empower women by creating business opportunities across 20 sectors.

Along with Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and several ministers, Revanth Reddy visited stalls set up by women associations to understand their products and marketing strategies.

Villupuram Member of Parliament D. Ravikumar has urged the Railway Board to approve the detailed project report (DPR) for the doubling of the Villupuram-Thanjavur section, with some variations.

Mr. Ravikumar placed this demand before the Southern Railway, as a follow-up to the annual meeting of the Southern Railway with Members of Parliament in Trichy on Wednesday (April 23, 2025) to discuss railway-related developmental activities, issues, and passenger amenities.

In a letter addressed to the Southern Railway General Manager, Mr. Ravikumar pointed out that the trains being operated on this section run with high occupancy rate. The occupancy of Villupuram-Cuddalore is 82% and Cuddalore-Mayiladuthurai is 91%, he said.

Stating that the route also witnessed heavy freight movement, providing more revenue to the Railways, he said that priority should be given to the doubling work. The MP also urged the Railway administration to hold consultations with the State government and provide alternate housing for families who had built houses near the Villupuram junction and Valavanur station.

He said that a notice was issued to the residents asking them to vacate the land owned by the Railways, as the administration had leased it to private individuals on a long-term basis. The residents have filed a case and obtained an injunction against the railway administration’s order.

Asking these long-term residents to vacate without providing alternative accommodation is unacceptable. The administration should consult the State government to ensure these families are provided with alternate housing, he said.

Mr. Ravikumar’s letter also contained demands for providing escalator facilities at Villupuram junction; introduction of EMU services at Villupuram; stoppage of Tejas Express at Villupuram; additional coaches for Puducherry to Madras Express; introduction of battery cards at the Tirukoyilur and Uludurpet platforms; passenger amenities at Ulundurpet, Tindivanam, and Tirukoyilur stations; stoppage of Tirupati-Rameswaram Express; priority for local residents in leasing railway property; and revival of special fares for senior citizens and journalists.

IPL 2025: Can Misfiring SRH Overpower Resurgent Mumbai Indians?

IPL 2025: Can Misfiring SRH Overpower Resurgent Mumbai Indians?

Hyderabad: The misfiring Sunrisers Hyderabad will hope for a happy homecoming when they take on a resurrected Mumbai Indians here on Wednesday, eyeing a much-needed victory to revive their campaign in the Indian Premier League.

With only two wins in seven outings, SRH are in a desperate situation. Their power-packed batting has let them down more often than not while their bowlers are not making any strong impression either.

That SRH are a one-dimensional side has been proven by the manner in which it has struggled on slow and turning pitches.

SRH batters thrive on flat wickets which produce high-scoring contests and having a favourable surface against MI would give the them the best chance to find some momentum.

Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head will have their task cut out against MI given SRH’s chances of winning hinge, to a large extent, on the left-handed opening pair. Their success in the powerplay defines the team’s fortunes in a contest.

Abhishek smacked a 55-ball 141 in his last outing here against Punjab Kings to record the highest individual total for any batter in this IPL.

There will be, however, some concerns around Head who hasn’t gone all guns blazing like he usually does and SRH will want their Australian star to be at the top of his game.

A defeat would put SRH in a tough situation.

For Mumbai Indians, it is a perfect opportunity to test their resurgence in an away game before they return home to face Lucknow Super Giants in Mumbai on Sunday.

Mumbai Indians have put their disappointing start to the IPL behind with three consecutive wins.

The five-time champions are coming off a massive nine-wicket hammering of Chennai Super Kings on a batting-friendly wicket on which they went over the line chasing a target near 180 with more than four overs to spare.

Rohit Sharma’s sensational 76 not out and Suryakumar Yadav’s 68 not out with all his trademark shots coming out fluently signalled the return to form of MI’s two batting pillars.

Tilak Varma did not get to bat against CSK but the left-hander has been in prime form, while Naman Dhir has shown signs of hitting his strides as a finisher alongside skipper Hardik Pandya.

Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t been at his menacing best when it comes to taking wickets but the ace India bowler has begun nailing his line and lengths perfectly.

This could be a warning sign for the SRH batters given MI tend to use Bumrah more strategically, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar sharing the new ball.

Head-to-head record:

Mumbai Indians boasts a good head-to-head record against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team has won 14 out of their 24 matches.

In their last encounter in Mumbai on a tricky Wankhede pitch favored the hosts as MI registered a four-wicket win exposing SRH’s frailties in challenging conditions.

Winning Probability:

The pitch at the Ragiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal is traditionally flat and a batting haven. The nature of the surface could have a bearing on the outcome with SRH’s two wins here coming on flat decks ensuring run-fests in their contests against Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings earlier. However, the Pat Cummins-led outfit has lost two home matches too.

A confident Mumbai, on the other hand, is improving by the day. With the addition of Bumrah and Rohit Sharma finding form, Hardik-led side would be walking into the game as favorites.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Pat Cummins (c), Ishan Kishan (wk), Atharva Taide, Abhinav Manohar, Aniket Verma, Sachin Baby, Smaran Ravichandran, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Travis Head, Harshal Patel, Kamindu Mendis, Wiaan Mulder, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Shami, Rahul Chahar, Simarjeet Singh, Zeeshan Ansari, Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga.
