The signing of a mutual defence pact between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on Sept 17 marks a moment of considerable significance for South and West Asia.
At its heart, the pact declares that aggression against either country will be treated as aggression against both. While the text is couched in general terms and leaves deliberate ambiguity about the scope of obligations, the symbolism is unmistakable.
