Satish Kaushik wanted to commit suicide after ‘Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja’ was a flop: ‘He was a dukhi aatma’ – The Times of India

Satish Kaushik who passed away in March 2023, wasn’t just known for some his iconic roles as an actor, like Calender from ‘Mr India’, but he was also known as a director with movies like ‘Tere Naam’. His directorial debut was ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja‘ in 1993. This was Boney Kapoor‘s passion project as a producer. Kaushik was an assistant director to Shekhar Kapur on ‘Mr India’ and thus, he was on board to direct ‘Roop Ki Rani..’
When Satish passed away, as a tribute to him, a special musical event was organised by Anupam Kher, which was attended by all the well-wishers and friends of the late actor-director. Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Shabana Azmi and many others were seen. During this event, Azmi had revealed, “After the film failed, he was a ‘dukhi aatma’ (sad soul) and he had this feeling that, ‘now I should die.’ He was on the first floor and when he looked down from there, because he was finding ways to commit suicide, there was a party going on. He saw potatoes and brinjals being fried. So, he was like, ‘yaar main aloo baigan ke beech mein agar kud ke marr jaunga toh yeh kharab death hogi (If I fall between potatoes and brinjals and die, it’ll be a bad death)’.”
However, the film flopped badly which left Boney in debts and everyone else in the team deeply upset. Satish Kaushik had almost felt suicidal. Once in an interview with Komal Nahta, Satish had said, “Flop is a small word. It was a disaster. I lost my mind. The film had a big hype but it flopped. The film worked only in premieres, by the time 9th premier of the film was organised only me, Anil Kapoor and Boney Kapoor were left.”
He added, “So, we were going for the film’s premier in Hyderabad and I asked Boney, ‘What is the report of the film?’ He said, ‘Satish it is a disaster.’ Then there was silence. I started howling. Sridevi tried to console me. Bony told me, ‘Satish don’t cry. Don’t make me weak.’ I wiped my tears and was ready for the premiere.”
