Sarkeet movie review: A light-hearted drama on ADHD, with a lot of untapped potential

A still from the movie Sarkeet.

Sarkeet (Malayalam)

Starring: Asif Ali, Divya Prabha, Deepak Parambol, Orhan

Direction: Thamar K.V.

Storyline: A jobless stranger unexpectedly walks into the life of a couple struggling to manage their child with ADHD.

Runtime: 125 minutes

At the core of Thamar K.V.‘s sophomore film Sarkeet is a literally sticky affair that pushes the limits of believability. But, it is to the credit of the makers and the actors involved that one goes along willingly with this rather unbelievable situation which propels the story forward. Thamar, going by the two movies he has made till now, appears to be adept at pulling off such uncommon occurrences in a light, engaging manner.

For about half of its runtime, Sarkeet moves along two parallel tracks, one dealing with a couple who are struggling to manage their child with a severe case of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and another on the travails of a young Malayali who has landed up in a West Asian country in search of a job.

Their child Jeppu’s (Orhan) unpredictable, hyperactive behaviour takes its toll on Stephy and Balu (Divya Prabha and Deepak Parambol), whose relationship is tested at times, with past rancour resurfacing. When their world meets unexpectedly with that of jobless Ameer (Asif Ali), it would expectedly change all their lives. Although one is not sure whether ADHD will manifest in the ways as portrayed in the film, Sarkeet is important in that it sheds some light on conditions that are often dismissed as just unruly behaviour. The underlying strain on the troubled childhood of another character gives the drama an added heft.

Thamar debuted with 1001 Nunakal (1001 Lies) that sustained itself on the tension that builds up amid a group of friends who play a game during a get-together. In that film, one could sense the filmmaker treading a little too carefully without allowing the tricky situation that he conjured up to not get out of hand. The same risk averse approach and the reluctance to dig deeper are evident in Sarkeet where the principal players all get out a little too easily from a not so easy situation. This approach perhaps led to the film hitting a little below than it could have, with the kind of possibilities provided by the subjects it tackled.

Yet, the film does have a few emotionally high moments that hit the right notes, although the film in the end fails to leave a lasting impact due to the rather light treatment.

Sarkeet works mainly because of the performances, most notably that of young Orhan as the hard-to-handle Jeppu. It is a role that could easily have been portrayed in an over-the-top manner, but Orhan delivers just the required nuances for the character’s condition. Asif Ali aces it in his familiar turf where he is required to portray the emotional upheavals of a struggling man caught in a strange situation. Divya Prabha and Deepak Parambol also pitch in with notable turns.

Sarkeet is a light-hearted drama about weighty issues, which ends up with a lot of untapped potential.

Sarkeet is currently running in cinemas.

None Of Our Business: US Vice President JD Vance Says Cant Tell India To Lay Down Arms

Indo-Pakistan Tension: In a major development amid the escalating military conflict between India and Pakistan, US Vice President JD Vance has said that America has no interest in interfering in the ongoing conflict. Speaking to Fox News, Vance said that US may try to encourage India and Pakistan to deescalate a bit but it won’t get involved in the middle of war that’s not its business.

“What we can do is try to encourage these folks to deescalate a little bit, but we’re not going to get involved in the middle of war that’s fundamentally none of our business and has nothing to do with America’s ability to control it,” said Vance.

He further said that it can’t ask India and Pakistan to lay down arms. “You know, America can’t tell the Indians to lay down their arms. We can’t tell the Pakistanis to lay down their arms. And so, we’re going to continue to pursue this thing through diplomatic channels. Our hope and our expectation are that this is not going to spiral into a broader regional war or, God forbid, a nuclear conflict. Right now, we don’t think that’s going to happen,” said Vance.

US Vice President Vance’s statement came after India and Pakistan exchanged fires and missiles attack in a military escalation following the Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor launched to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam Terror attack. While India maintained that ‘Operation Sindoor’ was non-escalatory in nature as no civilian and military installations were targeted in Pakistan and only terror camps were destroyed, the next day, Pakistan tried to attack 15 Indian cities using missiles and drones. India not only destroyed these missiles but later neutralises Pakistan’s air defence system in Lahore.

Later on the intervening night of May 8 and 9, Pakistan attacked Indian cities in J&K, Rajasthan and Punjab using missiles and drones, India launched a counter attack on key Pakistani military cites which is still ongoing at the time of publishing of this article.

Anupam Kher assures Mata Vaishno Devi and Army are protecting India

Veteran actor Anupam Kher took to social media to share a video from his family’s home in Jammu. The short clip, sent to him by his cousin, showed the area under complete blackout, reportedly due to recent security developments.

On Thursday, the actor shared the video on his X account along with a caption stating that he immediately called his cousin after receiving the video to check on the family’s safety. However, his cousin’s spirit made him proud as he reassured Kher that the Indian Army was there to protect them.

He wrote, “My cousin brother #SunilKher sent this video from his home in Jammu. I called immediately and asked him if he and his family are ok? He laughed a little proudly and said, ‘Bhaiya! Hum Bharat mein hain! Hum Hindustani hain. Hamari suraksha Bharatiya Sena aur Mata Vaishno Devi kar rahi hain. Aap tension mat lo. Waise bhi koi bhi missile hum zameen par nahi lagne de rahe.’ Jai Mata Ki! Bharat Mata Ki Jai!”
