Ram Navami processions were organised across the length and breadth of West Bengal with heightened aggression on Sunday (April 6, 2025) and at certain places leaders of the Trinamool Congress also organised and participated in such rallies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other Hindutva groups organised hundreds of processions with almost every leader from Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, State president Sukanta Majumdar, Dilip Ghosh and Locket Chatterjee, among others leading processions across different parts of the State.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was among the first to congratulate the people on Ram Navami on social media on Sunday (April 6, 2025) morning. “I appeal to all to maintain and uphold the values of peace, prosperity and development of all. I wish the celebration of the Ram Navami all success, in a peaceful manner,” Ms. Banerjee posted on X.

Mr. Adhikari, who inaugurated a Ram Temple at his constituency Nandigram, said the Chief Minister should not remind people to “uphold values of peace” on Ram Navami.

Trinamool Congress MLA from Jorasanko Vivek Gupta, party state general secretary Kunal Ghosh organised Ram Navami processions in the city. In Howrah’s Salkia, Trinamool Congress MLA Gautam Chowdhury participated in a rally organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Even in districts like Jalpaiguri and Birbhum, Trinamool Congress leaders took out Ram Navami processions. “Ram Navami processions do not mean BJP. Most of the Hindus are against BJP. Those who have joined Ram Navami processions are not in support of the BJP,” Mr. Kunal Ghosh said.

Ram Navami processions, a cultural import to the State, have coincided with the rise of hindutva politics in the State, which started in 2016. These processions have become a show of strength for the BJP. On Sunday (April 6, 2025), while the BJP leadership and their allies left no stone unturned for canvassing their support base through Ram Navami processions, the Trinamool leadership tried to compete with the hindutva forces.

Scenes of amity

Amidst the competitive Ram Navami rallies, there were signs of communal amity, where Muslims came forward and showered flower petals and offered food, drinks to those who participated in Ram Navami processions. Malda Uttar BJP MP Khagen Murmu was seen exchanging greetings with Muslims who welcomed the processions. This was in sharp contrast to developments in earlier years, where often Ram Navami processions had precipitated violence.

In 2024, there was a crude bomb explosion at the Shaktipur area in Murshidabad district during a Ram Navami procession. Prior to this in 2023, violence broke out in Howrah’s Shibpur and Rishra in Hooghly and Dalkhola in north Bengal area during a Ram Navami procession.

The Trinamool Congress from its official X handle highlighted how Bengal bore witness to a celebration of unity and brotherhood on the occasion of Ram Navami, describing it as the vision of the Chief Minister.

The processions of Ram Navami also witnessed youths brandishing weapons across the State. Participants in the processions were seen holding tridents, knives, swords, axes, and machetes in Suri, Barasat, Howrah, Kankinara and Berhampore. Videos aired by local television channels and circulated on social media showed minors brandishing weapons.

Political observers and social scientists said the number of Ram Navami processions in 2025 were higher in number than previous years. Massive Ram Navami processions were observed from Singur in Hooghly district to Naxalbari in Darjeeling district — areas where the Hindutva politics has not made much imprint in the past few years. At Jadavpur University, considered a seat of Left students politics, some students organised Ram Navami celebrations and worshipped an idol of Lord Ram.

Subha Protim Roy Chaudhury, associated with an organisation AMRA, who has been studying conflict during Ram Navami processions over the past few years, said that even in villages like Malda and Murshidabad, processions of Ram Navami were organised this year. Mr. Roy Choudhury said the processions would not end in a day and would continue throughout the month and culminate with the Chief Minister inaugurating Jagannath Temple in Digha.

Armed gang intercepted by kolkata police on basanti highway with weapons and crime plans | Kolkata News – The Times of India

Dwaipayan.Ghosh
Kolkata: Eight armed men, carrying a large cache of arms, were nabbed on the Basanti Highway close to Anandapur in East Kolkata by a large Kolkata Police force. The operation involved men from its Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Force units.
“The operation was carried out on the basis of a specific intelligence input. An operation was conducted by STF, Kolkata Police, with the assistance of the Commando Force of KP to intercept a gang of criminals proceeding to commit a major crime using firearms. The operation was carried out on Thursday evening with cops being armed and wearing bulletproof jackets,” said Additional CP (STF) Solomon V Nesakumar.
“A total of three firearms—two 7.65 mm semi-automatic pistols and one single-shot gun—two magazines, and 13 rounds of 7.65 live ammunition, three rounds of 8mm ammunition, one dagger, and one long commando knife were found from the car (Sumo) and bike in which they were travelling, along with two hand-drawn maps and ropes,” said Solomon.
Sources said the accused carried maps of entry-exit and even the house layouts of at least four separate addresses located in the Patuli-Narendrapur belt. “They were planning a major crime like dacoity and hence armed. Though no terror angle has been established, we are keeping all angles open.”
Old-timers at Lalbazar could not remember the last time commando unit officers were deployed to nab the robbers. “We had a tip-off that the accused—all criminals from Howrah and Lake Town—were heavily armed. Hence, we did not wish to take chances,” said a top cop at Lalbazar.
The accused include Suraj Chowdhury (28) from GT Road, Shibpur, Ankit Chowdhury (21) and Sankar Chowdhury (53) from Girish Banerjee Lane, Md. Tahir Ali (26) and Haider Ali (25) from PM Basti, Netai Singh (36) from Icchapur Shialdanga, Kartick Ram (48) from Bidhannagar Dakhindari Road, and Mizanur Zamadar (33) from Sangrampur.
The suspects will be produced before the court today. STF officials said appropriate charges would be filed against the accused, though specific details of the charges were not disclosed. This marks one of the largest coordinated arrests in the area this year.
This incident follows a pattern of similar seizures in the Howrah and Sealdah Station areas earlier this year. In January, police arrested five individuals near Surendranath Women’s College with a substantial cache of weapons. A separate operation a few days earlier led to another arrest at Baithakkhana Bazaar, along with large seizures, also involving firearms sourced from Bihar.
The STF intensified its operations following recent violent incidents in the city, including the broad daylight shooting of a Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor. Last week, the force uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing unit in Cuttack district, Odisha, arresting four individuals and seizing numerous weapons and manufacturing equipment. Prior to that, illegal gun-making units were busted in Madhubani in Bihar. MSID:: 120589495 413 |

HC closes plea to clean water channel that passes through reserve forest

Published

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has closed the public interest litigation petition filed in 2019 by Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu who had sought a direction to the authorities concerned to clean a high level water supply channel situated in a reserve forest area.

Mr. Appavu had sought a direction to the authorities to clean the channel that connected Alanthurai river and Suravali dam in the Western Ghats. The petitioner said that the water channel passed through a reserve forest in Kanniyakumari district.

Alanthurai river ran through Kanniyakumari district for most part. In 1969, the State government formulated a scheme for using its water. A small dam was constructed across the river at Kanjipparai. The high level channel connected Alanthurai river and Suravali dam, from where water was distributed to tanks in Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts in the ratio of 60:40, he said.

With the channel not having been cleaned up, free passage of water to the village tanks was disrupted, he said. If the channel was not cleaned, the livelihood of the farmers would be affected, the petitioner added.

A Division Bench of Justices G. R. Swaminathan and B. Pugalendhi took note of the status report submitted by the authorities which stated that the works had already been executed and completed. The court observed that nothing survives for further adjudication and closed the petition.

Rourkela: A laboratory assistant from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly duping his friend of Rs 12 lakh with a false job promise.
The accused, Rajiv Sethi (55) of Sector-1, Rourkela, was caught by Sector-7 police while attending a wedding in the city. Sethi had taken the money between 2022 and 2023 from complainant Ranjan Nayak, promising a job for Nayak’s brother-in-law at JNU. However, after receiving the money, Sethi kept delaying the promised placement with various excuses.
“When confronted in Delhi six months ago, Sethi not only refused to return the money but also verbally abused the complainant,” said a police official.
Following this, Nayak lodged an FIR at Sector-7 police station in March. Sub inspector R K Swain said, “The accused was arrested by us and we are further investigating the case.” Sethi was produced in court on Wednesday evening and sent to judicial custody.
