Over 2,700 cases of misconduct against women on Odisha roads in four years | Bhubaneswar News – The Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Altogether 2,783 women encountered ‘misconduct’ on roads, including state and national highways across the state during the past four years, with the capital city recording the highest number of 1,341 incidents, as revealed in the chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s assembly reply on Monday.
The chief minister’s written reply to a question raised by Satyabadi MLA Om Prakash Mishra did not specify the nature of women’s harassment; however, Odisha police sources indicated these incidents primarily involved eve-teasing and molestation. Within the commissionerate police system, the Cuttack urban police district (UPD) documented merely 9 such incidents during 2020-24.
Following the capital, Sambalpur registered 453 cases of misbehaviour with women, while Nuapada district reported 310 incidents during this period. Notably, 18 police districts, including Cuttack (rural), Jajpur, Kendrapada, Khurda, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Berhampur, Kandhamal, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Rourkela, reported no cases of women’s harassment or misconduct during the last four years, according to the assembly answer.
Police sources indicated that women experienced misconduct during phone and chain snatching incidents on roads. Other cases involved inappropriate remarks from unruly passersby. As such crimes against women on roads have raised serious safety concerns, most cases occurred during late evening when women were travelling either alone or with family members, sources said.
A senior police officer said: “Suspects in almost all cases were arrested following complaints by victims. Identification was achieved through CCTV footage and clues shared by victims.” Alleged misconduct to the fiancée of an army captain by a group of youth on the road in Patharagadia area on Sept 15, 2024, was the most recent crime falling under this category. Seven engineering students were arrested on Sept 21 in connection with the case.
Women’s rights campaigner Tapaswini Sarangi said: “The govt should install better lighting systems along all roads, including the state and national highways. Adequate and advanced CCTV cameras should also be installed for identification of the criminals. Highway patrolling for the safety of women should be launched.”
The CM’s written response also noted 5,668 highway thefts and robberies across the state in the past four years. The chief minister’s reply outlined govt measures to address highway crimes, including enhanced night patrols, CCTV installation, and improved coordination between districts and neighbouring states to restrict criminal movement.

Malad road dug up for concretisation in violation of BMC diktat: Ex-corporator | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: BMC’s road concretisation project is drawing flak in Malad West where an internal road in Jankalyan Nagar has been dug up in violation of the municipal commissioner’s order banning new road excavations after Feb 22.
A senior BMC official said they would look into the complaint, but there’s a possibility that the road was dug up earlier and now they are just completing the remaining work.
Former Congress corporator Sheetal Mhatre alleged that proper excavation has not been done for the road concretisation work and the stormwater drains are not being reconstructed, instead only the surface covers are being changed.
Questioning the need for an eight-lane duct on this narrow internal road in Jankalyan Nagar, Mhatre claimed that the four-lane duct in one carriageway is being laid “superficially” under the road to inflate the bills. “Moreover, the cables have been conveniently stuffed into the same excavated space and not in ducts. Also, the ducts are not being encased properly in concrete. A concrete bedding has to be created for the ducts, but they are using paver blocks instead,” alleged Mhatre.
When contacted, the senior BMC official said: “We will have to examine whether completely new concretisation work has been taken up at Jankalyan Nagar. If this is the case, action will be taken against the officials concerned. With regard to the stormwater drains, we will check if the contract is only for replacing the covers. If found otherwise, then strict action will be taken.” He clarified that even if the utility cables are not being inserted into the ducts now, they would be laid later.
In Andheri’s Marol (E), residents pointed out that there were elevation errors and technical flaws in the ongoing concretisation work on Church Road.
NGO Watchdog Foundation has written to the civic administration regarding the elevation errors. “The earlier road was 1ft below the new concrete road that is being laid. During monsoon, we can expect rainwater to enter houses and establishments as the height of the stormwater drains has been raised only 25cm above the existing road level,” said Godfrey Pimenta of Watchdog Foundation.

New Delhi: A fire broke out at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in the Karawal Nagar area of north-east Delhi on Thursday. The blaze occurred in a building located in Ankur Enclave, a residential neighbourhood. Later in the afternoon, another fire broke out in a market in Chandni Chowk.
According to police, the first fire was reported at 8:43 am, prompting an immediate response from local authorities. “A police team quickly arrived at the scene and alerted the Delhi Fire Service. Four fire tenders were deployed, and the fire was successfully brought under control,” said a senior police officer.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the building had been rented out illegally for hazardous activities. The ground floor was occupied by a scrap dealer, while the first floor was allegedly used for the illicit production of green firecrackers,” the officer added.
One individual, identified as Rizwan, sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted to GTB Hospital for treatment, the police said. Senior officials, along with the Crime Team and experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), inspected the site to assess the cause and extent of the fire.
Legal proceedings are underway, and a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
In a separate incident on the same day, another massive fire broke out at Bhagirath Palace Market in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk.
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), at least eight fire tenders were dispatched to the site to control the flames. The fire began around 1.50 pm in a shop located on the second floor of a building in Bhagirath Palace Market. “The fire originated in an electronic decoration shop,” a fire official said. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished, and no injuries or casualties were reported.

Armed gang intercepted by kolkata police on basanti highway with weapons and crime plans | Kolkata News – The Times of India

Dwaipayan.Ghosh
Kolkata: Eight armed men, carrying a large cache of arms, were nabbed on the Basanti Highway close to Anandapur in East Kolkata by a large Kolkata Police force. The operation involved men from its Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Force units.
“The operation was carried out on the basis of a specific intelligence input. An operation was conducted by STF, Kolkata Police, with the assistance of the Commando Force of KP to intercept a gang of criminals proceeding to commit a major crime using firearms. The operation was carried out on Thursday evening with cops being armed and wearing bulletproof jackets,” said Additional CP (STF) Solomon V Nesakumar.
“A total of three firearms—two 7.65 mm semi-automatic pistols and one single-shot gun—two magazines, and 13 rounds of 7.65 live ammunition, three rounds of 8mm ammunition, one dagger, and one long commando knife were found from the car (Sumo) and bike in which they were travelling, along with two hand-drawn maps and ropes,” said Solomon.
Sources said the accused carried maps of entry-exit and even the house layouts of at least four separate addresses located in the Patuli-Narendrapur belt. “They were planning a major crime like dacoity and hence armed. Though no terror angle has been established, we are keeping all angles open.”
Old-timers at Lalbazar could not remember the last time commando unit officers were deployed to nab the robbers. “We had a tip-off that the accused—all criminals from Howrah and Lake Town—were heavily armed. Hence, we did not wish to take chances,” said a top cop at Lalbazar.
The accused include Suraj Chowdhury (28) from GT Road, Shibpur, Ankit Chowdhury (21) and Sankar Chowdhury (53) from Girish Banerjee Lane, Md. Tahir Ali (26) and Haider Ali (25) from PM Basti, Netai Singh (36) from Icchapur Shialdanga, Kartick Ram (48) from Bidhannagar Dakhindari Road, and Mizanur Zamadar (33) from Sangrampur.
The suspects will be produced before the court today. STF officials said appropriate charges would be filed against the accused, though specific details of the charges were not disclosed. This marks one of the largest coordinated arrests in the area this year.
This incident follows a pattern of similar seizures in the Howrah and Sealdah Station areas earlier this year. In January, police arrested five individuals near Surendranath Women’s College with a substantial cache of weapons. A separate operation a few days earlier led to another arrest at Baithakkhana Bazaar, along with large seizures, also involving firearms sourced from Bihar.
The STF intensified its operations following recent violent incidents in the city, including the broad daylight shooting of a Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor. Last week, the force uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing unit in Cuttack district, Odisha, arresting four individuals and seizing numerous weapons and manufacturing equipment. Prior to that, illegal gun-making units were busted in Madhubani in Bihar. MSID:: 120589495 413 |
