Ranchi: Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday reiterated the Centre’s resolve to end Naxalism from the country by March 31 next year. Chairing the 27th meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council in Ranchi, Shah hailed the ongoing operations by security forces in left wing extremism affected regions and stressed that the eastern states must make efforts to fully implement the three new criminal laws.“Eastern states should make more efforts to fully implement the three new criminal laws as soon as possible. We achieved unprecedented success against Naxalism due to the unity of all states and the bravery of security forces. Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha have largely been freed from Naxalism. We aim to fully eradicate Naxal by March 31, 2026. There is a need for more work eastern states to curb narcotics, for which district-level meetings should be regularly organised,” he said. The council on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to thank the armed forces as Shah maintained that the armed forces of the country demonstrated their military prowess and courage to the world during the Op Sindoor, which was India’s response to Pahalgam terror attack. “PM Narendra Modi showed strong determination to present India’s resolve to end terrorism to the world,” he said.Shah added that development states can only lead to the development of India. “The effectiveness of regional council meetings under the Modi govt is evident as 83% of issues were resolved. From 2004 to 2014, there were 25 regional council meetings, while from 2014 to 2025, the number more than doubled to 63,” he said. The meeting discussed issues related to the Massanjore Dam, Taiyabpur Barrage, and Indrapuri Reservoir, as well as the division of assets and liabilities of several PSUs between Bihar and Jharkhand pending since the state’s bifurcation, informed a statement from the Press Information Bureau (PIB).The meeting was attended by Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, Bihar deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, and West Bengal’s finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. Shah also stressed on implementation of fast-track special courts (FTSC) for the swift investigation and resolution of cases of rape against women and children, brick-and-mortar banking facilities within the designated range of each village, implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), among others.
