NCW seeks action in IIT-M sexual harassment case | Chennai News – Times of India


Chennai: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of a sexual harassment case involving a 20-year-old intern at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to DGP Shankar Jiwal urging a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of the BNS. On June 25, an intern was sexually harassed by a food court employee on campus at 9.15pm. She raised an alarm, prompting campus security personnel to intervene and detain the suspect.Police arrested Roshan Kumar, 22, a native of Maharashtra, who was employed as a contractual staff member at a food outlet on the campus. He was later remanded in judicial custody.In an X post, NCW said Rahatkar directed the concerned authorities to ensure the survivor receives immediate medical and psychological assistance, along with compensation under Sec 396 of BNSS. “We have gathered evidence including eyewitness accounts and campus security footage. Investigation is on,” said an investigation officer.
