‘Will take firm & decisive action against terrorists’: PM Modi on Pahalgam attack | India News – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: India is committed to taking “firm and decisive” action against the terrorists who perpetrated the Pahalgam attack and those who support them, said PM Narendra Modi amid repeated calls by the global community for restraint and de-escalation and as tensions soar with Pakistan, reports Sachin Parashar.
After a bilateral meeting with visiting Angola President Joao Manuel Lourenco, Modi said both agreed that terror is the biggest threat to humanity. Modi delivered his media statement after the meeting in Hindi but switched over to English while talking about the April 22 attack.

PM remark suggests India hasn’t ruled out military operations

The PM had done the same two days after the attack while speaking in Madhubani in Bihar where he, in his first response to the tourist massacre, pledged to identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers. Modi’s remarks on the Pahalgam attack, are significant as these suggest India hasn’t given up on the military option for pursuing those who perpetrated the attack and their backers. Lourenço also strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and expressed solidarity with the Indian people. As govt weighs punitive measures against Pakistan for its role in the attack, it has come under some serious pressure from friends and partners like the US, EU and Gulf countries to avoid any escalation and resolve the cross-border terrorism issue diplomatically. Modi was speaking days after US secretary of state Marco Rubio urged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate and work for peace in south Asia. His counterpart S Jaishankar had responded by saying that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
“I thanked President Lourenço and the people of Angola for their condolences on the loss of lives in Pahalgam. India is committed to taking firm and decisive action against the terrorists and those who support them. We thank Angola for their support in our fight against cross-border terrorism,’’ said the PM, while announcing an expansion of the energy partnership with the southwestern African country that is an important supplier of oil and gas to India. Modi also announced a $200 million defence credit line for the modernisation of Angola’s armed forces.

Hundreds of farmers protest in U.P. against heckling of Rakesh Tikait; FIR lodged, one arrested

Hundreds of farmers converged at the GIC grounds in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday and protested against the heckling of farmer leader Rakesh Tikait when he had attended a meeting by right-wing groups in the city against the Pahalgam terror attack on Friday.

Cutting across party lines, MPs and MLAs expressed solidarity with the farmer leader at the panchayat called by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Naresh Tikait.

Striking an aggressive tone, he said the farmer community would not bear the charge of anti-national being levelled against his family.

Samajwadi Party MPs Harendra Malik and Iqra Hasan, and MLA Atul Pradhan demanded strict action against the hecklers. Ms. Hasan said the Tikait family fought for the rights of farmers and workers, and the harassing of the farmer leader “was no less than a terror attack.”

Two MLAs of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, an ally of the BJP, also turned up to support Mr. Rakesh. Rajpal Balyan, leader of the party’s legislative group in the Assembly, demanded stern action against those who misbehaved. Virendra Kumar, Congress MLA from Jhabrera in Haridwar, also expressed his anguish.

Later, farmers marched to the Town Hall, where Mr. Rakesh was barracked, and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack.

Local BJP leaders remained conspicuous by their absence. Mr. Rakesh, however, said some of them had expressed solidarity over the phone. The farmer leader didn’t address the panchayat. His supporters said he was rushed to the hospital because his blood pressure shot up.

Meanwhile, Muzaffarnagar police registered an FIR against unnamed “anti-social elements” who heckled Mr. Rakesh, and one person who allegedly pushed him was arrested.

Claims responsibility

In a related development, an obscure faction of the BKU that called itself BKU-Atal has taken responsibility for the protest against Mr. Rakesh. In a press conference in Agra, Amit Chaudhary, national president of the organisation, said Mr. Rakesh was targeted for his “links with pro-Khalisani elements”, and that the protesters were Jats like Mr. Rakesh. “He started wearing a turban after the farmers’ protests, and it is a symbol of Khalistanis. He opposed the abrogation of Article 370 and has now questioned the Pahalgam terror attack,” he remarked.
