The Mayiladuthurai District and Sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a 25-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in 2019.
The accused, Kathiravan of Vaitheeswarankoil, was convicted under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Kathiravan barged into the house of the child in 2019 and sexually assaulted her. Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, the Sirkazhi All-Women Police Station registered a case under the POCSO Act.
District and Sessions Judge R. Vijayakumari, who heard the case, found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹2,000 for committing the sexual offence, and another 10 years with a ₹2,000 fine for trespassing into the victim’s house with the intent to commit the crime. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
