Kuruvai package: Indifference towards tenant farmers alleged

The Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association has alleged that the interests of tenant farmers have been neglected in the implementation of the ‘Kuruvai Special Package’ scheme.

In a statement, association secretary Sundara Vimalanathan of Swamimalai said that normally the intending beneficiaries, both land owner-farmers and tenant farmers, would be asked to register their names with the Agriculture Department officials based on revenue records.

While the land owner-farmers were able to apply for the benefits, the tenant farmers were unable to complete the registration process as the registration of interest to receive the scheme benefits were accepted based on the Farmers Registry details already uploaded and available online.

Stating that the ownership of around 3 lakh acre wetlands in the delta region remained with Hindu religious mutts, Hindu temples, churches, mosques/darghas and other charitable trusts, he said denial of access to the tenant farmers to register as beneficiaries under the scheme was unethical.

He also sought tripling of the funds required to implement the scheme in delta region.
