Zelensky Picks Trump Over Europe, Announces Russia-US-Ukraine Trilateral | ‘EU Needs To Be Stronger’
Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are set to hold their first-ever trilateral talks starting today in the United Arab Emirates, marking a rare diplomatic moment amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the two-day meeting on January 23 and 24 will take place at the technical level in the UAE, following a series of high-level discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The announcement came shortly after an hour-long meeting between Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump, which Trump described as “good.” Alongside the diplomatic push, Zelensky delivered a stark message on European security. He warned that Europe remains too dependent on the United States and needs time to become stronger militarily. “Europe needs united armed forces — forces that can truly defend Europe today,” he said, questioning whether NATO could act effectively if U.S. support were ever uncertain. Zelensky also argued that Ukraine could significantly strengthen NATO’s Arctic and maritime defences if it were a member of the alliance, claiming Kyiv has the capability to counter Russian naval activity, including near Greenland.
