Kolkata: The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), which spearheaded the RG Kar movement, has planned out programmes for Aug 8 and 9 to mark the one year of the rape and murder of their 31-year-old colleague. The organisation has clearly stated it will not be part of the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’, announced by BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, in which the victim’s parents are scheduled to participate.“We will not participate in the Nabanna Abhiyan as we feel it is a political move. Our question to BJP’s Leader of Opposition is, while the state govt failed to ensure justice for Abhaya, why is he not raising questions against the CBI, which is a central govt agency that has also failed to procure justice for our colleague?” said Debasish Halder of WBJDF.Among the programmes by the WBJDF will be a torch rally from College Square on the intervening night of Aug 8 and 9, Raksha Bandhan on Aug 9 and a gathering in front of the ‘Cry of the Hour’ statue at RG Kar, where the members will stage a protest against the threat culture on campus and the rape. “The heinous crime was committed between midnight and 4 am on that dark night. We will be out on the road to remind all that our colleague is yet to get justice,” said Halder. The torch rally will end at Shyambazar, where the participants plan to stay the night, staging plays and drawing graffiti.“We believe there was more than one person involved in the crime but there has been only one arrest. Why is the supplementary charge sheet still not filed? Justice is pending, and we will keep reminding citizens and authorities of it until justice is served,” said Aniket Mahata of WBJDF.About the law college rape, WBJDF said only a democratic environment at educational institutes could stop such crimes on campuses. The organisation is discussing if they would send representatives to another Aug 9 event by Abhaya Mancha on the same issue. “We are in touch with Abhaya’s parents, and we will continue to support them in every avenue they take to seek justice,” said Arnab Mukhopadhayay of WBJDF.
