
Jharkhand beats Delhi, Maharashtra in share of ‘lakhpati’ taxpayers | Mumbai News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Jharkhand has emerged among the top states for high-income taxpayers, recording a greater proportion of “lakhpatis” than several larger and more industrialised states, including Delhi and Maharashtra. According to the latest tax data, 19.5% of income tax filers in Jharkhand declared annual incomes between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 50 lakh — higher than Delhi (17.6%) and Maharashtra (16.2%). This places Jharkhand in third spot nationally, behind only Karnataka (20.6%) and Telangana (19.8%). Tamil Nadu (18.8%) and Puducherry (17.4%) were also ranked ahead of the national average of 14.1%. Odisha (16.8%), Andhra Pradesh (15.9%) and Uttarakhand (14.2%) completed the top 10 list.
At the other end of the spectrum, Gujarat reported the lowest proportion of taxpayers in the Rs 12–50 lakh income bracket. Officials said this could be due to a broader and higher tax base in the stat
