Shivamogga
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, led by the party’s State president B.Y. Vijayendra, staged a protest against the State government, as part of its Janakrosha Yatre in Shivamogga on Saturday, amidst heavy rains.
The party had planned a protest march and a public meeting as part of the agitation against the rise in the price of essential commodities in Karnataka.
Addressing the workers, Mr. Vijayendra said that the Congress government in Karnataka had increased the price of over 50 essential commodities. It increased taxes on diesel, a move that would impact the price of many other products.
The government had no concern for the poor people of the State. Even government employees were not getting their salaries regularly, he alleged.
He also took exception to the 4% reservation for the Muslims in public contracts and alleged that the government misused the funds meant for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Lok Sabha members B.Y. Raghavendra, Govind Karjol, former Ministers Araga Jnanendra, Hartal Halappa, MLA S.N. Channabasappa, and others attended the protest meeting.
Meanwhile, members of the Shivamogga district unit of the Youth Congress staged a protest against the BJP.
Instead of protesting against the State government, the Congress members said that the BJP leaders should convince the Central leadership in Delhi and bring down the price of essential products, including petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders.
The police intervened and stopped them from reaching Gopi Circle, where the BJP leaders were protesting. They took Congress leaders into custody.
