Isro Achieves Major Advances: Nisar Mission and Semi-Cryogenic Engine Tests | Bengaluru News – The Times of India

BENGALURU: Isro achieved two milestones in the past month with the flagging off of the GSLV’s second stage for the upcoming Nasa-Isro mission, Nisar, and the successful testing of its semi-cryogenic engine at the Isro Propulsion Complex (IPRC) in Mahendragiri, it said late Friday.
Isro chairman V Narayanan officially flagged off the second stage (GS2) of the GSLV launch vehicle in the last week of March, destined for the launch complex at Sriharikota. This liquid stage will power the GSLV-F16 mission carrying the Nasa-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar (Nisar) satellite, with launch campaign activities already underway since early April.
In parallel development, Isro conducted a successful short-duration hot test of its semi-cryogenic engine at IPRC Mahendragiri on April 24. This 3.5-second ignition test marks the second achievement following the breakthrough first hot test conducted on March 28.
“During the test, the engine power head test article — comprising all engine systems except the thrust chamber — was ignited and operated at 60% of its rated power, demonstrating stable and controlled performance,” Isro said.
These tests form part of a planned evaluation series designed to validate the design integrity and performance of critical subsystems, including the turbo pumps, pre-burner, and associated control systems. The data collected will help finalise the operational sequencing of the full semi-cryogenic engine.
Additional qualification tests are scheduled to comprehensively validate the engine system before its integration into Isro’s launch vehicles.

G Parameshwara: Blames BJP for Chaos Behind Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Slap Gesture | Bengaluru News – The Times of India
BENGALURU: Home minister G Parameshwara Tuesday blamed BJP workers for triggering an incident in Belagavi that led to chief minister Siddaramaiah making a gesture as if to slap a police officer before pulling himself together after security was breached.
“The preliminary information I have is that some BJP workers from Mahila Morcha (women’s wing) entered the venue sporting Congress shawls. That is why the CM was upset,” Parameshwara said.
He said the group was quiet when senior Congress functionaries spoke but waved black flags and raised slogans when Siddaramaiah began to address the gathering. He said he has directed Alok Mohan, Karnataka DGP & IG, to examine whether there were any lapses in security arrangements.
He also criticised BJP, questioning the moral right of its workers to don Congress shawls. “BJP workers should have entered the venue wearing their party shawls and not Congress ones. If they had come to the venue wearing BJP shawls, then police would have known who they were,” he said. “What moral right does a BJP member have to wear a Congress shawl?”
On Timmapur’s terror remarks
On the controversy surround ing remarks made by excise minister RB Timmapur on the Pahalgam terror attack — he said there is “no proper information” on whether terrorists singled out Hindus to kill them — Parameshwara said functionaries should “refrain from giving personal opinions on national issues”.
“We need to be careful while speaking. This concerns national security,” Parameshwara said.
Defending Congress’ record on national security, Parameshwara said the party has made “immense sacrifices” and does not need lectures from critics. “No one else has made the kind of sacrifices for national security that Congress has. We don’t need to be taught lessons on this by others,” he said.

Court rejects guilty plea in jm road bomb blast case citing lack of detailed admission | Mumbai News – The Times of India
MUMBAI: Observing that the plea of being guilty appears to be tainted by his intention to seek lesser punishment and is also inspired by his long incarceration, a special court recently rejected the guilty plea of an accused in jail for over 12 years in the 2012 JM Road (Pune) bomb blasts case. The judge also noted that in view of the seriousness of the offence, the plea of guilty raised by the accused, Imran Khan, cannot be accepted. “Considering such an approach of the accused, it is clearly the plea to be raised of being guilty to secure leniency in punishment, and it does not reflect any positive assertion of committing particular acts by being a member of a conspiracy which were against the Govt of Law,” the judge said.
The judge further stated that a general guilty plea from an accused cannot be considered a voluntary acceptance of guilt for specific unlawful acts unless the accused clearly details their precise role in committing the crime. Without this level of detailed explanation, typically provided in an affidavit, the guilty plea cannot be deemed specific or voluntary, the judge reasoned.
“Rather, the circumstances reveal that the accused has raised the plea of being guilty repeatedly since the year 2023 due to the long incarceration and delayed trial and to seek lenient punishment on such count. The aspect of such long incarceration is being put forth as a point of bargaining on the point of quantum of sentence, which negates the plea of being guilty on his part,” the judge said. Once an accused pleads guilty and the court accepts it, he forfeits his right to a trial.
On August 1, 2012, four coordinated low-intensity explosions shook JM Road between 7.25 pm and 11.30 pm, injuring one person. Two more bombs were defused.
On February 20, 2025, Imran presented the application in person. He stated that he was continuously imprisoned since his arrest on December 20, 2012, for this crime. During his lengthy incarceration, he came to recognise his errors and wished to refrain from such actions in the future, instead dedicating his time and energy to constructive endeavours. His plea stated that he voluntarily and unconditionally pleaded guilty to all charges against him and requested that the court impose a sentence that serves the interest of his and his family’s well-being, as well as justice.
Special Public Prosecutor Vaibhav Bagade opposed the plea and sought its rejection. The accused was heard in person on April 9. Subsequently, he was given time for reconsideration and reflection until April 17. The accused did not withdraw his plea.
Last week, rejecting his plea, the judge said, “Offences for which charges are framed against the accused are of serious nature. It needs to be seen that it is the crime of having arranged, by being associated with a terrorist association, for causing the bomb blast at several places at Jangli Maharaj Road, Pune. The accused is also charged with such offence by having participated in the conspiracy and for having carried out reconnaissance at specified places on the instructions of other accused. He is also alleged to have participated in the crime by having purchased the material for preparing bombs.”
