IPL 2025: Lucknow Super Giants Team Preview – SWOT Analysis and Best XI | Cricket News – The Times of India

One of the newest franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) made a remarkable debut by qualifying for the playoffs in their first two seasons (2022 and 2023). However, the 2024 season proved to be a challenging one as they finished seventh in the standings with 14 points, narrowly missing out on the playoffs due to an inferior net run rate.
Determined to bounce back stronger, LSG made significant changes to their squad ahead of the 2025 season.

Bold moves and new leadership
Despite retaining five core players from the previous campaign, LSG made a high-profile decision to part ways with their former captain KL Rahul, who moved to Delhi Capitals. In an ambitious move to rebuild the squad, LSG went all out to acquire star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, breaking the league record with a staggering Rs 27 crore bid. Following his arrival, Pant was appointed as the new captain of the Lucknow-based franchise.
Apart from Pant, LSG made several strategic additions to bolster their batting line-up, securing experienced internationals like David Miller, Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh. They also retained key players including Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan. This mix of retained and newly acquired talents provides a solid foundation while enhancing their firepower.

IPL: How will GT, LSG, DC, PBKS, RR fare? Greenstone Lobo predicts

The SWOT analysis
Strengths

  • Power-packed batting line-up: With Rishabh Pant at the helm, LSG’s batting unit looks formidable. The presence of power hitters like Nicholas Pooran, David Miller and Mitchell Marsh ensures plenty of firepower in the middle and death overs. Aiden Markram’s ability to anchor the innings adds further depth to the line-up.
  • Versatile all-round options: The inclusion of all-rounders like Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram provides balance to the squad. Shahbaz Ahmed adds a valuable spin-bowling option while contributing with the bat.
  • Spin depth: Ravi Bishnoi remains a vital cog with his effective leg spin, while Shahbaz Ahmed complements him with left-arm orthodox. The combination offers LSG a balanced spin attack on subcontinental pitches.

Weaknesses

  • Fragile pace attack: LSG’s fast-bowling unit appears vulnerable with injury concerns. Key pacers Akash Deep, Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav are either recovering from injuries or yet to join the squad. This makes the pace department relatively inexperienced and susceptible to pressure.
  • Dependency on top order: With big-hitting names like Pant and Pooran at the top, any early wickets might expose a slightly inconsistent middle order, particularly if Mitchell Marsh or David Miller fail to fire.

Opportunities

  • Pant’s captaincy and aggression: Rishabh Pant’s fearless approach as captain could inject fresh energy into the squad, motivating players to perform at their peak.
  • Emerging talents: Players like Ayush Badoni and Shemar Joseph have the chance to cement their spots by showcasing consistent performances.

Threats

  • Injury concerns: With four of their main pacers dealing with fitness issues, LSG’s bowling balance might be severely impacted.
  • Pressure on Pant: Taking over as captain after a tough season and commanding a record salary could add pressure on Pant, affecting his performance.

LSG’s Best XI for IPL 2025: Rishabh Pant (Captain/wk), Aiden Markram, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Ayush Badoni, Shemar Joseph, Shahbaz Ahmed, Akash Deep, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav
LSG Squad Overview

  • Batters: Abdul Samad, Ayush Badoni, Matthew Breetzke, David Miller
  • Wicket-keepers: Rishabh Pant (Captain), Aryan Juyal, Nicholas Pooran
  • All-rounders: Yuvraj Chaudhary, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Arshin Kulkarni, Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Shahbaz Ahmed
  • Bowlers: Akash Deep, Akash Singh, Avesh Khan, Shemar Joseph, Mohsin Khan, Prince Yadav, Digvesh Rathi, Ravi Bishnoi, Manimaran Siddarth, Mayank Yadav

With Rishabh Pant at the helm and an aggressive batting unit at their disposal, LSG aim to put the disappointment of the previous season behind them and emerge as strong contenders for the IPL 2025 title. However, the bowling unit’s fitness remains a concern, and the success of their campaign will heavily depend on their pacers’ availability and form.

‘Yeh kaisi ladai hai…’: Mohammed Siraj wants terrorists to be punished without mercy | Cricket News – The Times of India

Mohd Siraj Instagram Story

New Delhi: Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has joined the growing chorus of voices from the sporting world expressing sorrow and outrage over the barbaric terrorist attack that occurred on April 22 in the Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack, which claimed the lives of at least 28 people and injured over 20 others, has been described as one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
Taking to Instagram, Siraj penned a powerful and emotional message condemning the brutality:
“Just read about the horrific and shocking terrorist attack in Pahalgam. To target and kill innocent civilians in the name of religion is pure evil…
“No cause, no belief, no ideology can ever justify such a monstrous act. Yeh kaisi ladai hai… jahaan insaan ki jaan ki koi keemat hi nahi…
“I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and trauma the families must be going through.
“May the families find the strength to survive this unbearable grief. We are so sorry for your loss.
Who’s that IPL player?
“I hope this madness ends soon and these terrorists are found and punished, without mercy.”
Siraj’s words resonated with many fans and fellow players, who echoed his sentiments in the comments, lauding the cricketer for speaking up against such senseless violence.

The attack has sparked a major security response in the region. The Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and central agencies have launched an intensive manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Meanwhile, national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have vowed that those responsible will be brought to justice.
As the nation mourns yet another tragedy, Siraj’s message stands as a reminder that in times of darkness, voices of compassion, unity, and courage must ring louder than ever.

The players of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians will wear black armbands during their IPL match which will not feature cheerleaders and fireworks here on Wednesday (April 23, 2025) to mourn the victims of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that caused 26 deaths.

The teams will also observe a minute’s silence to pay their respects to those affected by the incident that has drawn international condemnation.

“The players of two teams will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence in memory of all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam,” a BCCI source told PTI.

“As a mark of respect there would be no cheerleaders on the sidelines of MI vs SRH game. No crackers will be burst,” he added.

Terrorists opened fire on civilians at the popular tourist location in south Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least 26 persons and injuring several others.

The Resistance Front (TRF), which is a part of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack has drawn strong condemnation from across the world.

The Indian cricket team snapped bilateral cricket with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and recently refused to tour the country for the Champions Trophy, prompting the ICC to make provisions for a neutral venue in Dubai.

Like any other cricketer from the country, young Delhi Capitals opener Abishek Porel aspires to represent India in the future but said his current focus is to help his side win its maiden Indian Premier League trophy this year.

Chasing 160, the 22-year-old made 51 off 36 balls to help DC win by eight wickets against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).

“Obviously, I am enjoying every innings, trying to develop in every innings. The future plan is to play for India, play for the country for a long period,” Porel said at the post-match press conference.

“But current focus is the IPL trophy, how can I help the team in winning the trophy, how can I contribute for DC. This matters a lot right now.

“I know my game and the support staff also knows that. The support staff always tells me to play freely and not to take any tension.”

DC bowlers come good

Asked to bat, LSG made a quick start with Aiden Markram (52) and Mitchell Marsh (45) sharing 87 runs for the opening stand in 10 overs.

But DC bowlers made a brilliant comeback with Mukesh Kumar (4/33) leading from the front to restrict LSG to 159 for 6, a target which Porel feels was gettable.

“The wicket was very good, so 160 score was a bit less, so we had that in mind that we need to chase these runs. Good toss to win. There was not much difference but the skipper took a good decision,” Porel said.

“They (LSG) got runs initially but we knew we can restrict them in middle overs. We had good spinners so we backed ourselves and made a comeback with some good bowling in the second half.”

LSG assistant coach Vijay Dahiya said the hosts lost the momentum in the second half of their innings after a bright start.

“I think leaving pitch, you can see that we scored over 80 runs in nine overs. From there we lost the momentum a bit. We had the momentum and we should have taken advantage of that,” he said.

“Let’s give credit where its due. I think Delhi Capitals’ bowlers assessed the conditions better. They made a very good comeback.”
