Indian Muslims condemn the mass killings of Syrian minorities by extremist Islamists | Mumbai News – The Times of India

MUMBAI: Indian Muslims for Secular Democracy (IMSD) has condemned the mass killing of civilians in the latest clashes between loyalists of the toppled Bashar al-Assad and the security forces of the present regime allied with extremist Islamist forces in north-west Syria.
In a statement signed by over 100 intellectuals and activists, IMSD’s convenor Javed Anand has said: “One may have differing opinions on the former government of Bashar al-Assad, but we speak out unequivocally against the targeted pogroms and murder of the minority communities, namely the Alawites, Christians and Shiites.”
IMSD’s statement has been endorsed by leading civil society organizations and prominent individuals supportive of the rights of minorities, irrespective of caste and creed. Included among them are important office bearers of the CPI and CPI(M).
“The crisis is so stark that US and Russia had to call for an urgent closed door meeting of the 15-member UNSC. US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, strongly condemned “radical Islamist terrorists, including foreign jihadis” committing the massacres, and reaffirmed Washington’s support for Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities, including Christians, Druze, Alawites, and Kurds. Moreover, Rubio demanded accountability from Syria’s interim government,” said the statement.
The statement quoted Moscow’s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, as saying that both Moscow and Washington are in contact on the issue and that, “The council was united in what we discussed… everyone spoke out. I wouldn’t say with one voice, but everyone emphasized the same elements: the inadmissibility of what happened, the mass murders, and violence.” The UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has condemned what he calls “extremely disturbing” reports of brutal “revenge killings”, in which “entire families, including women and children” have been savagely butchered. Of the more than 1,000 people who have reportedly been killed, more than 750 are civilians.
Certain media reports mention figures up to 4,500 and more. While the Alawites (a sub-sect among Shia Muslims) are the main target of the Islamists, Christians and Shias too are being targeted in the Sunni majority country. It must emphasised that Sunnis who are offering protection to their compatriots too are being targeted. A protest called in Damascus by all sections of Syrian society, was dispersed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) gunmen. The Islamist jihadists from the various factions of the HTS, Al Qaeda and ISIS ran amok as they killed the defenceless civilians in cold blood. Many of these jihadists are of non-Syrian origin; they come from Turkey, Albania, Chechnya, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Uyghurs from Xinjiang (China), and this has only worsened the dire situation. Following the international outcry, Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa (formerly Jolani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a breakaway faction from Al Qaeda) announced the formation of an independent committee to “investigate the violations against civilians and identify those responsible for them.”
In a Reuters interview, Sharaa said mass killings of Alawites were a threat to his mission to unite the country, and promised to punish those responsible, including his own alies. IMSD calls for an independent inquiry into the pogroms, by the UNHRC, as the Jolani regime has extremely low credibility among the afflicted communities. The killings by the Islamists are fuelled by an ideology of religious sectarianism and extremism. Slogans such as, “Alawite and Shia to the grave and Christians to Beirut”, are commonly heard in Wahhabi/Salafist mosques and in street protests. IMSD has asked Indian Muslims to speak out against the massacres being perpetrated by extremist Muslims in the name of Islam during this holy month of Ramzan. We also appeal to all Indians as well as the global community to speak out against the horrendous killings of religious minorities in Syria.
“We call for a dialogue and reconciliation within Syrian society and for them to do the utmost to prevent the ‘Al Qaeda-isation’ or ‘ISIS-isation’ of Syria. It is our belief that the greater majority of the Syrian people are committed to an inclusive, pluralistic, secular democratic Syria. In these difficult times, the world stands with the Syrian nation,” said the statement.

Armed gang intercepted by kolkata police on basanti highway with weapons and crime plans | Kolkata News – The Times of India

Dwaipayan.Ghosh
Kolkata: Eight armed men, carrying a large cache of arms, were nabbed on the Basanti Highway close to Anandapur in East Kolkata by a large Kolkata Police force. The operation involved men from its Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Force units.
“The operation was carried out on the basis of a specific intelligence input. An operation was conducted by STF, Kolkata Police, with the assistance of the Commando Force of KP to intercept a gang of criminals proceeding to commit a major crime using firearms. The operation was carried out on Thursday evening with cops being armed and wearing bulletproof jackets,” said Additional CP (STF) Solomon V Nesakumar.
“A total of three firearms—two 7.65 mm semi-automatic pistols and one single-shot gun—two magazines, and 13 rounds of 7.65 live ammunition, three rounds of 8mm ammunition, one dagger, and one long commando knife were found from the car (Sumo) and bike in which they were travelling, along with two hand-drawn maps and ropes,” said Solomon.
Sources said the accused carried maps of entry-exit and even the house layouts of at least four separate addresses located in the Patuli-Narendrapur belt. “They were planning a major crime like dacoity and hence armed. Though no terror angle has been established, we are keeping all angles open.”
Old-timers at Lalbazar could not remember the last time commando unit officers were deployed to nab the robbers. “We had a tip-off that the accused—all criminals from Howrah and Lake Town—were heavily armed. Hence, we did not wish to take chances,” said a top cop at Lalbazar.
The accused include Suraj Chowdhury (28) from GT Road, Shibpur, Ankit Chowdhury (21) and Sankar Chowdhury (53) from Girish Banerjee Lane, Md. Tahir Ali (26) and Haider Ali (25) from PM Basti, Netai Singh (36) from Icchapur Shialdanga, Kartick Ram (48) from Bidhannagar Dakhindari Road, and Mizanur Zamadar (33) from Sangrampur.
The suspects will be produced before the court today. STF officials said appropriate charges would be filed against the accused, though specific details of the charges were not disclosed. This marks one of the largest coordinated arrests in the area this year.
This incident follows a pattern of similar seizures in the Howrah and Sealdah Station areas earlier this year. In January, police arrested five individuals near Surendranath Women’s College with a substantial cache of weapons. A separate operation a few days earlier led to another arrest at Baithakkhana Bazaar, along with large seizures, also involving firearms sourced from Bihar.
The STF intensified its operations following recent violent incidents in the city, including the broad daylight shooting of a Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor. Last week, the force uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing unit in Cuttack district, Odisha, arresting four individuals and seizing numerous weapons and manufacturing equipment. Prior to that, illegal gun-making units were busted in Madhubani in Bihar. MSID:: 120589495 413 |

HC closes plea to clean water channel that passes through reserve forest

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has closed the public interest litigation petition filed in 2019 by Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu who had sought a direction to the authorities concerned to clean a high level water supply channel situated in a reserve forest area.

Mr. Appavu had sought a direction to the authorities to clean the channel that connected Alanthurai river and Suravali dam in the Western Ghats. The petitioner said that the water channel passed through a reserve forest in Kanniyakumari district.

Alanthurai river ran through Kanniyakumari district for most part. In 1969, the State government formulated a scheme for using its water. A small dam was constructed across the river at Kanjipparai. The high level channel connected Alanthurai river and Suravali dam, from where water was distributed to tanks in Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts in the ratio of 60:40, he said.

With the channel not having been cleaned up, free passage of water to the village tanks was disrupted, he said. If the channel was not cleaned, the livelihood of the farmers would be affected, the petitioner added.

A Division Bench of Justices G. R. Swaminathan and B. Pugalendhi took note of the status report submitted by the authorities which stated that the works had already been executed and completed. The court observed that nothing survives for further adjudication and closed the petition.

JNU lab assistant held for Rs 12 lakh job fraud | Bhubaneswar News – The Times of India

Rourkela: A laboratory assistant from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly duping his friend of Rs 12 lakh with a false job promise.
The accused, Rajiv Sethi (55) of Sector-1, Rourkela, was caught by Sector-7 police while attending a wedding in the city. Sethi had taken the money between 2022 and 2023 from complainant Ranjan Nayak, promising a job for Nayak’s brother-in-law at JNU. However, after receiving the money, Sethi kept delaying the promised placement with various excuses.
“When confronted in Delhi six months ago, Sethi not only refused to return the money but also verbally abused the complainant,” said a police official.
Following this, Nayak lodged an FIR at Sector-7 police station in March. Sub inspector R K Swain said, “The accused was arrested by us and we are further investigating the case.” Sethi was produced in court on Wednesday evening and sent to judicial custody.
