Women in Jammu and Kashmir have a reason to smile. In a first such initiative, the J&K government on Tuesday (April 1, 2025) flagged off the free bus service for women, which has come as a shot in the arm for working women in the Union Territory.
Terming the step as “a landmark move towards gender-inclusive mobility”, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the zero-ticket travel initiative for women at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Center (SKICC) in Srinagar.
Srinagar city’s population, as per the 2011 Census, was 12,19,516, with women comprising 47% of the population. In Jammu district, out of 15.29 lakh population, 7.16 lakh are women.
The free service is limited to smart city e-buses and J&K Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) buses across the Union Territory. “This initiative is more than just a welfare measure, it is a bold step towards women’s empowerment and inclusive development,” Mr. Abdullah said.
He said this is not just about affordability but also about accessibility, safety, and creating an environment where women feel empowered to travel freely. “Our vision is to make J&K a model of inclusive growth where no woman is held back due to mobility constraints,” Mr. Abdullah said.
J&K has 200 e-buses operating across the UT, mainly in urban centres. Officials said there are 130 RTC buses in Kashmir and 105 in the Jammu region, which ply on inter-district routes and highways. “We hope that they (women) will be able to travel all over Jammu and Kashmir in a safe environment,” the Chief Minister said.
The initiative has been welcomed by women in J&K. “This will give confidence to women to travel more and could spur more women to come out and work,” Asiya Jan, an entrepreneur, said.
