A van which was allegedly attempting to transport dogs from Kerala into Kattcahal, a village near Kerala- Tamil Nadu border in Kanniyakumari district, was intercepted by the locals on Wednesday, who immediately alerted the police.
A Kerala registration van had transported more than eight dogs into Kattchal, which falls under Kadayal town panchayat in Kanniyakumari district. The van had crossed the Netta check post under the pretence that the dogs were being taken for a clinical visit.
According to locals, this was the second time such an incident had occurred. They alleged that the dogs were transported by a local resident from Kunnathukal, to control the stray cattle menace around his newly constructed building. However, on Wednesday, when they saw the dogs being released again into their village, they stopped the van and alerted the police.
Acting swiftly, the police along with Kadayal Executive officer (EO) arrived at the spot. The EO has imposed a fine of ₹2 lakh and seized the Registration Certificate of the van, an official source said.
