The body of a fisherman from Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district, who fell into the sea while fishing off the Kodiyakkarai coast, was recovered on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Lourdu Prabhakaran, 38, son of Susai Anthony, a resident of Idinthakarai fishing village. He had ventured into the sea on December 27 along with seven other fishermen, including Bakyaseelan, 40, of Thangachimadam, from the Pamban fishing harbour in Ramanathapuram district.
While fishing in the deep sea off Kodiyakkarai, Prabhakaran reportedly slipped and fell into the water on Monday night and went missing. Fellow fishermen continued the search, and his body was found floating in the sea on Tuesday morning. The body was later brought ashore at Kodiyakkarai in the evening.
It was subsequently sent to the Government Hospital in Vedaranyam for post-mortem examination.
The Vedaranyam Coastal Police have registered a case and are conducting further inquiries.
