The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to extend 18 roads edge to edge, by filling the gaps between carriageways and pavements with cement concrete, at an estimated cost of ₹3.16 crore, a GCC official said.

On stretches with heavy vehicle movement, dust from unpaved gaps along the edges of the roads is a pressing problem. This project attempts to address this particular issue, said an official of the civic body.

The works are expected to be completed in two months. A tender has been floated and work orders will soon be handed out, according to the GCC.

The work would be taken up under 11 packages, and would cover a total of 18 roads in Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, and Perungudi.

Roads identified include Tiruvottiyur High Road, North Wall Road, Peddu Street and Hunters Road in North Chennai; Padi Kuppam Main Road, Anna Nagar 2nd, 3rd and 4th Avenues, St. Mary’s Road, and South Canal Bank Road, C.P. Ramasamy Road, P.V. Rajamannar Salai (partly), Ashok Nagar 4th Avenue, West Jones Road, Ramapuram Main Road, Reddy Street, Kamarajar Salai and CSIR Road.

1 Tiruvottiyur High Road, North Wall Road, Peddu Street, Hunters Road 13
2 Padi kuppam Main Road 19
3 Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue 31
4 Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue 23
5 Anna Nagar 4th Avenue 29
6 St. Mary’s Road, South Canal Bank Road 25
7 C.P. Ramasamy Road 31
8 P.V. Rajamannar Salai (part), Ashok Nagar 4th Avenue 39
9 West Jones Road, Ramapuram Main Road 39
10 Reddy Street, Kamarajar Salai 30
11 CSIR Road 37
Total 18 Roads 3.16 crore

The project involved extending the road surface uniformly from one end to the other, so that the carriageway ends exactly where the pavement begins, an official of the Bus Route Roads Department of the GCC said.

The official added that the gaps on the roads developed due to utility works such as laying of storm-water drains and underground pipelines. These cannot be addressed while the work is in progress.

These gaps have now been proposed to be filled with cement concrete to create a continuous surface, he said. The works would be carried out on both bituminous and cement concrete roads.

The extension could not be carried out in places where the storm-water drains (SWDs) or other civic infrastructure were being built, the official said.

Regarding structures such as silt catch pits and gutters on roadsides, which help water flow into the SWDs, the official said existing structures would be retained or integrated into the finished surface with proper openings to ensure smooth flow without obstruction.
