The city police on Monday arrested four youths and booked a minor boy in connection with the looting of 1.5 kg gold from a jewellery shop worker by first waylaying his scooter and then kidnapping him in a car and assaulting him in the city on September 26.
The police in a release gave the names of the arrested as Farish, 18, of K.C. Road; Safwan, 23, of Mukkacheri; Arafat Ali, 18, of Mastikatte; and Faraz, 19, of Ullal. The minor boy was booked.
The police said that when Mustafa, a worker at a jewellery shop at Hampankatta, was carrying a gold bar, two persons came in a two-wheeler and waylaid him near Venkataramana temple on Car Street at 8.45 p.m. At the same time, some others came in a car to the spot and pulled Mr. Mustafa into the car and took him away. They assaulted him in the car and pushed Mr. Mustafa out at Yekkur and made away with the gold bar.
The Mangaluru North Police had registered a case in this connection under Sections 137 (2), 310 (2) of the BNS.
Among the arrested, Farish had worked in the same jewellery shop. The minor boy who was working in the same shop gave details of the movement of Mr. Mustafa to Farish.
Arafat Ali and Faraz were the ones who waylaid Mr. Mustafa’s scooter.
The police have seized the scooter used by the accused and the car used is yet to be seized. The accused who made away with the gold bar are yet to be arrested.
“There are clues. Teams are working on it,” Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said.
