Duplantis, Biles win top honours at Laureus Wolrd Sports Award

Star pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, while American gymnast Simone Biles bagged the top women’s honour at the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony here on Monday (April 21, 2025).

The 25-year-old Duplantis, regarded as the greatest pole vaulter of all time, was fourth-time lucky after being nominated in each of the past three years. He became only the second track-and-field athlete after four-time winner Usain Bolt to claim the prestigious award.

Duplantis won his second World Indoor Championship gold medal in March and broke his own world record for a remarkable ninth time in 2024 en route to Olympic gold in Paris.

The Swede-American gained more votes than Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz (Tennis), France’s Léon Marchand (Swimming), Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (Cycling) and Netherlands’ Max Verstappen (Motor Racing).

“I am incredibly honoured to have won my first Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in the sporting capital of Madrid and to have the great Usain Bolt pay tribute to me…” he said.

Biles, who returned to action after a break, clinched three gold and one silver medal in a stunning comeback at the Paris Olympics to claim her fourth Laureus award — equalling the record held by Serena Williams. Both the athletes also have one Comeback of the Year honour.

“I’m so happy to be here in Madrid and to receive my fourth Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award,” said Biles, who topped the polls ahead of Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí (Football), Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan (Athletics), Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon (Athletics), USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (Athletics) and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka (Tennis).

Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade got the Comeback of the Year award for her inspirational return from a series of career-threatening injuries. Andrade, who contemplated quitting after three ACL injuries, made a triumphant return by winning gold in the floor exercise at the Paris Games.

“This beautiful Laureus Statuette represents a huge amount of hard work, of struggle and pain, and also great happiness,” she said.

She surpassed Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant, USA’s Caeleb Dressel (Swimming), Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami (Alpine Skiing), Spain’s Marc Márquez (Motor Cycling) and Australian Ariarne Titmus (Swimming).

Real Madrid were adjudged Laureus World Team of the Year following a dominant campaign that saw them win La Liga for a record 36th time, clinch their 15th UEFA Champions League title, and defeat Barcelona in the Supercopa de España.

They also lifted the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup early in the 2024-25 season, making Carlo Ancelotti the most decorated manager in the club’s history.

Tennis great Rafael Nadal was conferred the Laureus Sporting Icon Award in a year he announced his retirement from professional tennis.

‘Back in 2006 I won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in Barcelona… Tennis and sports in general has given me so much…,” Nadal said.

Tom Pidcock won the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award for his dramatic Olympic mountain bike cross country gold. After suffering a puncture, the British cyclist fought back to overtake home favourite Victor Koretsky in the final stages.

Pidcock became the fourth British cyclist to win the award after Jamie Bestwick (2014), Rachel Atherton (2017) and Beth Shriver (2022).

Paralympic swimmer Jiang Yuyan won the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award after claiming seven gold medals from as many events.

Teen football sensation Lamine Yamal received the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. The Spanish winger became the youngest player to score and feature in a European Championship final and was named the tournament’s Best Young Player.

Kelly Slater, widely considered the greatest surfer of all time, received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award. Slater is a four-time winner of the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award and an 11-time World Surf League champion.

‘I drink 5 litres of …’: MS Dhoni finally breaks silence on viral rumour | Cricket News – The Times of India

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has revealed the “most ridiculous” rumour he had heard about himself.
When MS Dhoni exploded onto the cricketing scene in the early 2000s, his incredible power-hitting and remarkable fitness fueled widespread speculation about his diet.
Rumours circulated that his daily intake included a staggering five litres of milk, and this was believed to be the reason behind him hitting those massive sixes.

Poll

What do you think is the main reason for CSK’s poor performance this season?

At a promotional event in Chennai, he was asked about this year-old rumour. The former India captain replied with a smile: “I drink five litres of milk a day.”
“I used to drink maybe a litre of milk, you know, spread throughout the day. But four litres, you know, it’s a bit too much for anyone,” he added.
The former India captain also laughed at the rumour about him making lassi in a washing machine.
He said: “First of all, I don’t drink lassi.”
Who’s that IPL player?
The 43-year-old is currently leading CSK in the absence of regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been ruled out due to an elbow injury.
Having already lost six out of eight games, the bottom-placed CSK will find it extremely difficult to win all their remaining six games to make it to the last four stage, which looks like a long shot at the moment.

Shah Rukh Khan: The superstar who turned IPL into a blockbuster

Dhoni rarely gives his opinion on any issue, but he didn’t mince words in dissecting his team’s poor batting. CSK have consistently failed to either chase or put up big scores.
“I think we were quite below par, because we all knew that dew would come in the second half, and we were in a position to exploit the middle overs,” Dhoni said, speaking about the lack of cricketing sense among the batters.

Former Australia test batter and TV commentator Michael Slater was sentenced to four years’ prison on Tuesday (April 22, 2025) after pleading guilty to domestic violence charges, but will walk free after serving more than a year in custody.

Slater’s prison sentence was partly suspended, a registrar at the Maroochydore District Court said.

Slater was refused bail by the court just over a year ago after being remanded in police custody and charged with multiple domestic violence offences on Queensland state’s Sunshine Coast between December 5, 2023 and April 12, 2024.

The charges included allegations of assault, strangulation, burglary and stalking in relation to multiple incidents against a woman in the Noosa region.

In sentencing on Tuesday, Maroochydore judge Glen Cash told Slater it was obvious he was an alcoholic, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

“Your rehabilitation will not be easy — alcoholism is part of your make-up.”

Mental health issues

Slater played 74 Tests from 1993-2001 and became a successful cricket commentator before being axed by the Seven Network in 2021.

He has been charged with multiple domestic violence offences in recent years and struggled with mental health issues.

Slater was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order by a Sydney court in late-2022 after pleading guilty to charges including common assault and attempted stalking of a woman.

A community corrections order is a non-custodial punishment in Australia.

IPL 2025 | KKR facing same failures as seen throughout this IPL, says Eoin Morgan

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled with batting issues throughout this IPL season and the changes made for the home game against Gujarat Titans were not effective, feels former captain Eoin Morgan.

KKR’s loss to Gujarat Titans by 39 runs here on Monday (April 21, 2025) was their second consecutive defeat in the tournament, third in the last five matches and overall fifth in eight games.

It has also been a season of struggle at home for the three-time champions who have also lost three of the four matches at the Eden Gardens.

“Kolkata Knight Riders has simply not bounced back as well as we would have liked them to. It’s always a good sign for a strong team with a lot of character around, but they had the same failures that they’ve shown throughout the tournament,” said JioStar expert Morgan.

“They made a couple of changes (against GT), mainly to try and gain some impetus in their batting line-up, and it didn’t necessarily come off. Were the changes worth it? They’ll sit back and say no.” Morgan said KKR failed to forge partnerships in chase of 199 as they finished at an ordinary 159 for eight.

“It was interesting to hear Ajinkya Rahane talk about 199 being a chaseable score because towards the back end of Gujarat Titans’ innings, we thought the ball held up more than we expected (and) that made finding boundaries harder,” he said.

Morgan added, “But there was no rhythm, no substantial partnerships — almost the polar opposite of what Gujarat Titans displayed.” Morgan was all praise for India and GT pacer Prasidh Krishna who delivered another vital spell of 4-0-25-2.

“He’s the purple cap holder at the moment, and his rhythm just keeps getting better. We know he has that extra bit of pace to work with, but you have to admire the strength he brings during the middle phase of the game,” he said.

“As a captain, having a seamer who can make that kind of impact in the middle overs is absolutely priceless.” “He now finds himself with the most wickets in this year’s tournament — by some margin, actually, by four. It’s great to see him growing as a player, evolving across formats, and now being rewarded with national honours as well,” Morgan added.

Meanwhile, former India batter Ambati Rayudu praised B Sai Sudharsan, who made 36-ball 52 to take his tally past 400-run mark in this IPL, for playing the game in “traditional style”.

Rayudu said, “It gives us such joy to watch him bat. As a classical batsman, he shows how the game can still be played in a traditional style — (to) use the pace of the ball, play under your eyes, keep it along the ground, and play smart cricket. Playing smart cricket brings runs and also builds confidence.”
